Will all cars' liveries eventually be carbon fiber?

Post by drledford93 »

Just saw Merc's team say it went "all black" to save weight. I also noticed McLaren had a significant portion of it's body in natural CF. That begs the question--will we eventually see ALL cars mostly black/bare CF? Thoughts?

I think you are right. For the next while anyway.
The Alfa is half black, the Ferrari is half black, Aston Martin, McLaren etc. etc.
With all cars having the same front and rear wings, there will not be much to differentiate them anymore.

However, as the color is closely related to the sponsors, I think the sponsors will be put pressure on getting the regulations changed somehow.

Next, will we see a Ferrari built with red impregnated carbon fiber?

Possibly use a color in the resin like they used to with the fibre glass bodies in th 60's/70's?

Cheers,

And in the 80's, the blue and white Brabhams were still colored that way!

Interesting though, because of the weight issue, seems that some F1 teams (McLaren and Williams at least) are now following what is common use at Indycar: using big enveloping decals instead of paint. I wonder if a kit of one of the current cars could be made of dark grey plastic, with texturized CF in it, and have the livery directly applied with decals. More or less like the old Tamiya Lotus 107, but properly working now, specially with the current matt finishes. Oh yes, here I am trying to find an excuse to build a kit faster, without having to paint it...

As Henry Ford once said, you can have your Model T in any color you like, as long as it's black. Seriously though, this Mercedes is the best it's ever looked in the halo era. I agree however, that sponsors are not going to allow this to become a black herd of cars. At least I hope so.

This is not a worry, the minute all the cars are predominately black, someone is gong to see the financial opportunity if their car stands out and is noticeable. Considering this is a sport, where being seen is the most important aspect that brings in money to the teams, I just do not see that this is going to be a problem.
