Well, I'm fairly confident this is a set of tyres :D.
I think I have seen them before, but I can't quite place it. The sidewall talks to me, but it's voice is garbled. Either we're looking at another 1930s car (even if the main thread looks like something from the late 60s) or at something from the 50-60s. However, due to tyre width and sidewall, I'd say this is could be something like an Englebert Ambassador (or thereabouts) tyre, say Alfa 12C36 or maybe that's just wishful thinking. Again.

Mercedes W196 or 300 SLR.

Well, once again my first thought was Mercedes - but again, it was the wrong period. I was looking at W25 and W125, preferably the latter as it would pair nicely with the AU. With a bit of artistic license, I think, the sidewall could be called a similar, but then the tread doesn't match at all. So then onto other cars from that era - and none really matched, with the Alfa 12c36 tyres being closest but not 100%.
As for the W196R - I think Tommy is spot on. It'll be either the regular cigar or the streamliner or indeed the 300 SL(R). Go here for a few shots of the W196R where I believe the tread is a 100% match and even the sidewalls do match. As for racing pedigree - 2 world championships (1954/1955) - it doesn't get much better than that. And as it is only 1 version being listed, I'd say it's the cigar not the streamliner.
But maybe it is the 300 SL(R) - if that please make it the SLR not the regular version.

And as for why the tyres looked familiar - it's one of the cars I did for our GPL 1955 mod. But then again, I also did the skins for the 1937 Titans. Biased much? ;)

/edit
removed the "Le Mans tragedy" bit as that was the 300 SLR not the 196R - got a bit too excited it would seem.

I also think Tommy has nailed it. Kudos!

The long wheelbase W196 would be fantastic.

Hi,
Tires and wheels could be those of a birdcage, chassis of the last picture too even if its tubes look a bit thick.
