Instruction mistake - 1/20 AMD McLaren MP4/1B

Post by Steffen_T »

Hi all,
as some of you might have seen, I am also building a McLaren MP4/1B right now.
The kit is by AMD and has the product number AMD 20013
This is the decalsheet that comes with the kit:
Image

There is a mistake in the instruction for the decal placement regarding the two black "Hercules" decals. As you can see in the picture above decal 14 is small and decal 16 is large.
According to the decal placement 14 (small) goes on top of the sidepod, while 16 (large) has to be used on the rearwing endplates:

That's wrong! The small decal should be placed on the endplates, and the large decal on the sidepods!

If you have this kit you should write a small reminder in the instruction.

Hi Steffan,

Thanks for sharing this info.

Having added a note about decal placement to my kit, I noticed the main upper body casting in my kit has a few symmetrical differences. The sidepod openings and front suspension areas are not symmetrical. None of these are show stoppers, and can be corrected.
I am curious to know if your kit had the same errors?

Hi Paul,

yes, I noticed the chassis is not entirely straight in the frontsuspension area, but I think you have to look very close to notice it, once it is finished.
If I am wrong, I will find it out very soon.

What do you mean about the none symetric sidepod openings in particular? If you mean the opening on top, I think it has to be that way. I took this picture several years ago at Hockenheim, and the opening on the right side (from the drivers point of view) is larger then on the left side.

The area that required the most preparations, was the rearsection. In order to get the body and the undertray fit together, I had to expand the rear of the body with some putty.
Another problem was the opening in the enginecover through which you can see the airfunnels. I think they are located too closely together and would touch each other if you simply drill the holes according to the indicated positions.
In this case I took an airfunnel from a Tamiya Ligier JS11 (you know, the one were four funnels are connected with each other) and used it as a template to drill the holes in the correct distance.
I still have to finish this area, but if everything works fine it should look great!

Hi Steffen,

I don't intend to make mountains of this minor observation, but to my eye there is a slight outage in three areas.

As per my attached image, the red lines indicate minor differences.

Each fault is correctable.

Cheers, Paul

Hi Paul,

I think you are right:

The body in total is not completly straight, but with this old kits I think you always have to keep in mind, they were designed many years before the introduction of 3D printing.
I won't modify the frontsuspension. It's to late now, but I still think the car is going to look nice, once it is finished.

Nice looking work with the paint and decals Steffen, to a large extent I think the minor faults are hidden when the kit is completed.
