Continuing the theme of figuring out what would be best done in resin vs. white metal, I decided that I want to open up the airbox roll hoop intake properly. In order to do this I need to make a resin cast mold copy of the top of the monocoque. That way I can bore the proper hole through the air intake / roll hoop area and have it look like a full pass-through instead of just being able to deepen the white metal intake and paint it black.

So, back at the silicone mold making again...

Build 48 sm.jpg
Time to get brave again, using the tape line as a guide (since it's also molded into the resin replacement piece I can match up and glue / putty on that tape line...)

Build 51 sm.jpg
We'll see how this goes in terms of fit once I've got the holes bored through the airbox and see how they match up.

While waiting for the airbox resin to cure completely I did a resin mold and cast of the steering wheel also. This is so I can grind off the smaller dials/switches on the wheel and remake them using individual switches, which will be easier to paint before setting them in the wheel. Tameo does a nice white metal steering wheel with details but in 1/24 it would be difficult to paint, thus the effort to cast a copy and work with each switch individually.

Been busy with the silicone and resin on this build so far...

Results of the roll hoop airbox intake cast and boring-through work. Small air bubble in the lower front edge of the intake but I'll fix that later...
Build 52 sm.jpg
Made some alignment pins to get best positioning for fit and bonding...
Build 53 sm.jpg
Build 54 sm.jpg
This is how it looks once lined up and set. I'm really happy with how this turned out because I think it's a big step forward for this particular kit.

Update after long hiatus from posting due to work, family, work, etc...

Time to work on the monocoque floor area in front. The kit does not have a correct floor for the footwell so we must go about fabricating one. So first look:
Build 58 sm.jpg
First go at fabricating a suitable floor to blend in:
Build 60 sm.jpg
And then some putty to blend and shape for floor area:
Build 61 sm.jpg
More coming...

Floor on this car needs a lot of work to thin and shape.

After some cleanup previously done...
Build 62 sm.jpg
And more thinning done on this go...
Build 63 sm.jpg
I'll do a lot more of this in coming sessions as well, still a ways to go.

Sidepod intakes are still rough
Build 70 sm.jpg
Build 71 sm.jpg
Time to start working on the sidepod intakes themselves because even after the intakes are smooth and shaped I will need to construct a duct inside the sidepod. This car will be displayed vertically on a mount, so the intakes will be highly visible and will need to reflect as accurately as possible the real car.

So we do more work here to start building and shaping the ducts:

Start to measure, match up, and define the shapes of the intake duct...
Build 75 sm.jpg
Build 76 sm.jpg
Build 78 sm.jpg
Start to take into 3 dimensions with the angles measured against the intake and the radiators that will have to fit against the back of the duct, trying to keep everything with the right shape to carve and blend it later...
Build 79 sm.jpg
Build 82 sm.jpg
This is headed in the right direction so far given the idea of how I would like to see the final carving and blending go in the upcoming steps. This is just the start of this phase.

Sorry for the poor image quality on the thumbnails but I've kept the file size small for the forum; if you click on them they are a bit clearer.

More to come.

Cheers.

Very nice work! I don't envy you doing this in white metal and i totally understand the resin copies.
I've been doing the same thing. In the end it will pay off!
Looking forward to more progress and the finished result!

Cool project. We don't get to see Tameo 1/24 kits built so often, and I honestly didn't know Tameo did the F2002. Good to see you reviving it, looking forward to seeing more.
Cheers,
Chris
