Tamiya Lotus 79-4 started
Well I have been asking lots of questions so it is time to start using the help I received.
It is time to take a step out of the comfort zone. I never build my models opened up. All aircraft's have the canopy closed and my cars have the doors and bonnets closed.
I have built two Lotus 79 and have eight more in the stash so I thought that I would at least build one undressed. I started with the side pods. The bottom should not stay on the car when the side pods are removed so I cut the bottoms off the cockpit and glued them to the side pods. I also cut the rear from the side pods.
Unused holes for the early oil coolers was filled as well as the holes for mounting the side pods.
Looking at pictures of the oil coolers and radiators showed that the Tamiya oil coolers has the wrong shape so I used the Hasegawa part instead. I will use the radiator in the kit but need to modify it a bit. It look a bit thin so I added plastic car to make it "fatter". The Hasegawa oil coolers needed to be filled on the bottom so more plastic card was used.
I used etched radiator mesh from Crazy Modeler and the part with four holes from the Hasegawa etch set. I framed the radiator with plastic strips.
The bottoms got the same treatment.

Re: Tamiya Lotus 79-4, more etch
I am adding random etch parts.
The etch on the pedals are from the Tamiya set. The wall and floor in the nose has been robbed from the 1979 Martini Lotus conversion set from MFH.
Another piece from the Tamiya set,
and a few more. I don't know why I bother with these small parts that will be invisible.

Good start, Björn. Yeah, why do we add details that can never be seen. We must be crazy. I've got the same "disease". LOL

Re: Tamiya Lotus 79-4 started
Put on Alclad aluminium and covered it with their Aqua Gloss.
I drilled three holes above the seat as they are missing in the kit. I think the tub got the correct glossy shine but the aluminium shade is to grey.
There is a running in the gloss coat. Perhaps I can polish it away or hide it with a oily rag or similar. Or another option is to get another shade of aluminium colour.
While I think about it I will steal some more parts from the MFH kit for use on this one.

Re: Tamiya Lotus 79-4 started
As I was raiding the MFH Transkit for usable parts I noticed an oddly shaped box. It should go under the oil-tank between the gearbox and the engine. I was wondering if it was something just for the 1979 season but I found a picture of it mid season 1978. Hasegawa has it in the kit.
So I started to build one in plastic. I started to collect the usable parts that won't be visible on the MFH-build and will add some leftover plastic and etch parts from Hasegawa as well.

Re: Tamiya Lotus 79-4 cockpit
And a note about the plate with the holes above the radiator. Looking at pictures the 4x2 holed plate is present at the Swedish GP. The single lined four holed plate can be seen at the German GP. Well this is the only car where I have to think about that. The other seven cars will be closed up so it won't be visible.

Re: Tamiya Lotus 79-4 started
Well this was not suppose to happen. I was not going to build a Hasegawa Lotus parallel with the Tamiya but now I have started on it. It will be the 79-1 (again).

Hi Bjorn,
Great looking work so far. I wonder if TS 30 would give you a closer match to the aluminium tub colour?
Cheers, Paul
