PrintLab is back on track!!!

As we told you a few weeks ago, SpotModel's PrintLab needed a pit stop. Since then we have replaced all the digital technology of our decal print production equipment, upgraded printing software, and run hundreds of tests to achieve the best balance between decal thickness, gloss, and color coverage. It has not been easy at all!!! But we think that the improvement achieved has been really remarkable.

What will you notice in the new PrintLab products? The first thing is the paper, which we have changed to white. The next thing you will notice is that the tones, especially the reds-oranges-yellows are much more intense and saturated. And if you take the magnifier glass and compare it with the previous prints, you can clearly see how the detail has taken a big step forward, especially in the black motifs. The new decals adapt better to curved surfaces, they are softer, brighter, thinner...

Right now we are racing against the clock validating all previous designs and printing all the jobs that were pending. Not only that, but we are also reprinting all the designs that were in stock. So, we ask for your patience, your PrintLab will soon be in your hands!

A century of Le Mans

You can't deny it: the 92nd edition of the Endurance Race par excellence, which was celebrating its centenary, has had all the ingredients to be considered one of the most exciting of all time... it could even give rise to a new Hollywood script! XD

Changing weather, accidents, strategy fight, overtakings to the limit, changes of leadership with all the main manufacturers occupying the first position at some point in the race... and as a climax, the victory of the prodigal son of endurance racing after 50 years of absence in its first attempt against the great dominator of the category, Toyota, which had won the last 5 editions, and which presented a great fight until the very last moment. At this point it is impossible that there's still some person on the planet who does not know, but just in case: Ferrari won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2023!!!

As if that were not enough, all the scale modelers get double congratulations, because Profil24 is already finishing outlining the model of the race winner Ferrari 499P, with first-hand information since it was present in the Le Mans paddock with the camera in hand collecting all the details so that we can build this model that has already a place of honor in the history of Ferrari. Not only that, but also Number Five has been taking color samples and has already announced their specific color reference for the scale model. It doesn't get any better than this!!!

FW11 power

If we ask about "a system that will change the course of Formula 1 history", the answer is quick for most fans: the famous Williams active suspension. Many will think of the FW14b model used by Mansell in 1992 to achieve his only F1 crown and Prost's FW15c in 1993 achieving his fourth win, both with dominant seasons in the Formula 1 World Championship... so much dominant that the active suspension was forbidden for the following season.

What not everyone knows is that the active suspension system had been produced much earlier, and the honor of fitting the first system went to Lotus with its 92T model in 1983, using a hydraulic system controlled by a complex computer. And it is that Lotus had already suffered the famous "porpoising" effect in its Lotus 80, with what its drivers defined as "terrifying losses of grip" caused by the car's own movements during acceleration and braking. The solution of the always great Colin Chapman was to develop an active suspension that would always keep the car at the same height, but his success was limited by the technology of the time: small computers were not powerful enough.

We had to wait 4 more years to see for the first time how a car equipped with active suspension achieved victory in a Formula 1 Grand Prix, more specifically in the 1987 Italian Grand Prix driven by Nelson Piquet at the wheel of the Williams FW11B, which was also the first time that Williams used the solution officially. A milestone that undoubtedly helped Nelson Piquet finally win the title that season.

Thanks to Studio27 and their transkits we can now build up to 3 different versions of the award-winning FW11B using the Tamiya model of the FW11 as a base, among which of course is the version with active suspension.

Mr. Hiro

This week we have found the unexpected news of the death of a true benchmark in the world of scale modeling, Mr. Misao Hiro, founder of Model Factory Hiro.

He was passionate about scale modeling, and committed in body and soul to our beloved hobby, showning on several occasions a daring and very accurate vision and approach. As he himself said, he manufactured the models he just wanted to build, without paying too much attention to possible suggestions and always using references from the real world subjects. This working method has made his scale models to be highly valued throughout the world, and in recent times it is complicated to find a single reference that has not been sold out in record time.

From our humble store, here's all our admiration to his personality and our most sincere condolences to his family and friends. The focus of MFH as a company is to continue with the legacy and spirit that Misao has inspired throughout all these years, and proof of that is their announcement of one of his latest creations, the Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe.

The entire SpotModel team hopes that there are scale modeling lovers wherever he is, because we don't think that Misao will quit his hobby wherever he goes, and we hope that MFH continues delighting us with his fabulous creations.

What is the greatest achievement in any race? It's quite clear: arrive first at the finish line. Teams strive to develop the latest technologies and provide them to their drivers, and these use those technologies at the highest level lap after lap for achieving that coveted goal. It is that simple, right?

Of course, when it comes to model all that circus in scale, things are not much different. You all want to be the first to get that new scale model, or to know about that new detail up part, or to get your hands on some new livery... For doing so, here at your favourite team we developed the one thing you absolutely need to reach that goal: the "notificator"

Instead of staying all day at SpotModel website hitting the refresh button of your browser (which you are very welcome to do, but we think there are better thinks to do and particularly during summertime), you can just add ANYTHING you want to "the notificator", and it will take care of the rest Do you need to know when one given product gets more pictures, or gets in stock, or is going to sell out, or gets a price reduction? Just "add it to your notifications" (using the button intuitively labeled with that exact text) and it will send you an email the very moment that happens. Are you a total fan of Komakai or any other manufacturer? Just browse to that manufacturer and click on the notify button, and the "notificator" will send you an email the very moment we add a new product from that manufacturer.

Want to be more specific? No problem You can filter any manufacturer or any category to be as specific as you need (for instance, "Decals for Formula 1 cars in 1/20 scale of the 80's" or "Rally cars by Tamiya in 1/24 scale"), and add that specific filter to your notifications instead. Does our filtering tools fall short to you? Are you just crazy about "decals in 1/24 scale manufactured by Reji model under 25 euros of Valentino Rossi driving a Rally car instead of a motorcycle"? (we all have our things, right?) However, keep in mind that you're not alone at the race track! A private Ferrari

We love that part of scale modeling that allows us to know and tell unique stories and moments of motor racing, of which we would probably never have heard otherwise. For instance, Shunko Models announces its upcoming novelties and among them is a livery of an F1 Ferrari that calls our attention for one detail: the black air intake. But also, the number doesn't match any of the Ferrari regulars: it is number #36. Perhaps there was a race with a third driver registered, or where one of the original drivers got injured? Great mysteries of the world of competition... XD

We investigated a little, and that's how we discovered that there was an agreement to use the Ferrari 312T in a private team, the Everest team, which takes its name from the sponsor, one of the largest rubber companies in Italy. What a surprise! We had seen cases of private Lotus, Williams and BRMs, racing even in local championships like Formula Aurora, but we had no idea of this adventure of a private team racing a Ferrari in such recent times! To a greater surprise, some Giancarlo Minardi was involved in the project, the same Minardi who later founded his own F1 team.

The driver of that Ferrari was a young Italian named Giancarlo Martini, and (this world is full of surprises!) his nephew, Pierluigi Martini, ended up racing at Minardi when it was fitted with Ferrari engines, obtaining the best results of Scuderia Minardi in F1 history, two fourth places in 1991.

And another piece of information that we did not know: in the collaboration agreement between Ferrari and the Everest team included the supply of engines for contestants in the Formula 2, the prelude to F1... so, Ferrari was also in F2 as an engine supplier? Perhaps not much is known about this part because the results were quite discreet, although it did win a round in the Misano race in 1977.

Just to be able to tell the story to everyone who looks at the model, the boss of SpotModel has directly decided to keep two sets of decals for himself...

43.5ºC / 110ºF

Yesterday the whole SpotModel team ended up in the pool, among other things because the thermometer went up and up until it reached 43.5 degrees Celsius (about 110 Farenheit). A temperature that justifies running out to get into the water and staying there for three days straight, except to go to the bathroom, to eat something and to assemble half a dozen scale models.... XD

Things are a little less hot today, so we happily get back to work in the warm SpotModel facilities located in the South of Europe, a fantastic place to sweat during summer.

Luckily this week we have received supplies with refreshing news from the north: USCP, with part of the new references for the Mini Cooper from Ukraine; Reji from the Czech Republic, with references all of them in resin; Falcon Scale Models from Poland sent us a couple of new motorcycle chains; and from Germany Scale Productions have sent us several very interesting resin references.

43.5ºC / 110ºF

Yesterday the whole SpotModel team ended up in the pool, among other things because the thermometer went up and up until it reached 43.5 degrees Celsius (about 110 Farenheit). A temperature that justifies running out to get into the water and staying there for three days straight, except to go to the bathroom, to eat something and to assemble half a dozen scale models.... XD

Things are a little less hot today, so we happily get back to work in the warm SpotModel facilities located in the South of Europe, a fantastic place to sweat during summer.

Luckily this week we have received supplies with refreshing news from the north: USCP, with part of the new references for the Mini Cooper from Ukraine; Reji from the Czech Republic, with references all of them in resin; Falcon Scale Models from Poland sent us a couple of new motorcycle chains; and from Germany Scale Productions have sent us several very interesting resin references.
