Speed build: Talbot-Lago 4.5L GP

Post by DarylH »

I'm battling a major modeler's block her so I've set aside the S27 McLaren I've been struggling with and pulled this Talbot-Lago from the closet. I hope a box stock speed build will get me going. I think I'll search for an engine pic just to get the colors right but there will be no extra detailing here. I just need to have some success with a kit to get myself going again.

Cool car, I made this myself a while ago from a Merit/Smer kit and always thought it was the exact same kit as the heller. Looks like I was wrong. Here's one reference pic of this beautifull car, good luck with it.

Cheers, Arjen

Wow, I didn't even realise that kit (or brand) existed - looking forward to seeing the progress!

I just primed the kit wheels. They are quite finely molded for plastic and will look pretty good with some silver paint. I've started the front suspension and should have more pics before bed time.

More bench time today. Engine and front suspension are together. Steering is poseable........

Image

The wheels look good in Tamiya silver leaf and engine is built out of the box......

Image

When I stripped the chrome from the mirror fairings I found that the sprue was molded from clear plastic. I've never seen that before.....

Image

The paint will be TS44 Brilliant Blue as seen on the interior tub......

Image

It really feels good to be making some progress!

I'm now debating the steering rim color. The restored car in the pic from Arjen shows a black rim but I wonder if the original may have been wooden. A wood rim would be a nice touch of color in that cockpit but period pics of the car seem impossible to come by.

The body is split down the middle so I'll have a long seam to deal with but I'm hoping to get to the paint booth by this time tomorrow.

Nice progress you are making. Feels good to get things done when you have had a block/break in building or when everything you start has an issue pop up....

You are off to a good start. In pictures of all preserved Talbots I've seen the steering wheels have black rims. This picture of a 1948 Talbot seems to have a black one to.

It seems to be a very nice kit. I've buit the very old Smer/Merit kit and found the wheels very disappointing.
