i built another one, this time the 1974 Indy 500 winner driven by Johnny Rutherford, the AMT McLaren M16, another 50 years old kit.
And you notice the age while building, the Tamiya kits from the mid 70s are miles ahead... no holding pins, questionable parts... it's not really fun to build, but the shape is IMHO a bit closer to the original compared to the Eagle kits.
Several things are plain wrong: the Turbo/Exhaust is different on the original, the front wing would be on a totally different place, and while the windscreens are always way too thick, this time it was also completely the wrong shape. And this is just the tip of the iceberg. So I changed a couple of things:
From the 3D printer came: Tires, brakes, mirrors, windscreen, fuel buckeyes, belt buckles and the springs (printed the inner parts and got 100 metal springs for 5€ from the net). I changed the turbo/exhaust, scratched a better roll bar, added the belts and cut a little bit around the cowling to make it fit.
Painted with TS56, several Metal colours, Mr. Super Clear on top. The original decals were not usable anymore, but Indycals has replacements.
Still nothing for rivet counters, but I hope you like it.
