1/24 Jordan 191 Ponderings…

Post by Alex_D »

Hi folks,

This post could be a load of waffle but hopefully it’s of interest to someone out there

I recently acquired a 1/24 Wave Jordan 191 resin kit as seen in these photos. My version is the Suzuka 1991 livery with the Pepsi logos instead of the 7up ones (Zanardi & de Cesaris at the wheels).

I’ve built a number of 1/35 military resin kits in the past, but this is my first resin F1 car kit. Overall the kit is quite nice, and you can tell that a lot of love was put into the design and master at the time.

That said, there’s some serious shrinkage to the resin parts. I’ve seen this before on resin kits but not to this extent. The cockpit insert has shrunk around 3-4mm in all directions. Not sure if this is just bad luck or standard for 33 year old green resin Wave kit

I’m sure that with plenty of tinkering, evergreen, and putty I can get the kit together. Interestingly, despite the apparent shrinkage the wheelbase measures out perfectly to the millimeter.

I am however wondering whether the defects of the kit provide an opportunity to kitbash it with the Hasegawa Jordan 192 to create a better model of the 191

To my untrained eye the two cars seem very similar with the exception of the mods to the 192 to accommodate the Yamaha engine. The front wing aero looks different too. Front and rear suspension, gearbox, rear wing, monocoque, and chassis look pretty comparable on the other hand?

If I was feeling really adventurous I could even rob a Hasegawa Benetton B190 for a Ford V8 engine and mate it to the Hasegawa Jordan 192 gearbox but that might be going overboard…

Any thoughts as to whether my kitbash solution is a viable one or am I missing something obvious and I’m better off just building the Wave resin kit ‘as is’ and moving on with my life?

Any and all responses appreciated :)

Alex

Hi, I have that kit, and the shrinking cockpit part is common for this kit. You can either use plastic card to make a new floor or rob the Hasegawa kits, which I obtained at bargain prices to use as donors. I left mine curbside. Also, Shunko made decals for several versions. I think they are sold out now. Also try Pattos Place for decals.

These kits used a spinning technique that was new at the time for resin models. As you can see the model has no air bubbles and is perfectly molded due to that. Don't understand why that one piece shrunk so much. Also you can use or rob parts from the Hachette 191, which is very nice, but the tires need to be replaced with the Hasegawa parts.

Hi Alex,

The 191 and 192 look alike but are quite different. I was thinking using the Hasegawa 192 to do a 191 in 1/24th scale. I make drawings of both cars from Tamiya and Hasegawa instructions. I overlay the drawings and find the differences.

I did not go into details to check the accurracy of Tamiya and Hasegawa drawings.

The black line one is 191 and the red line one is 192. They are in the same scale.

@F1tommy - Thanks very much for the info :) Handy to know that this is a common thing with these Wave resin kits and my example wasn't just a dud. You're right, shrinkage aside the casting is excellent. Appreciate the heads up on the decals too - Will keep an eye out.

@CK - Really appreciate this info and the plans. Assuming the Hasegawa & Tamiya designs are both accurate the two cars really are substantially different! This difference certainly kills any possibility of cross-kitting the kits for me, but at least I now know where things stand which is super helpful.

Thanks again both! :D
