McLaren MP4/13 (Tamiya) & MP4/12 (Revell)

Post by Steffen_T »

Back in 1999 / 2000 I got the new released McLaren MP4/13 by Tamiya. I started the kit back then, but run into trouble, as I couldn't find a good colour for the dark sidepods. I tried the suggested paintmarker, but it didn't worked.
So the kit went back into the box.
I now tried it again with Zero paints. And as it seemed appropriate, I did the Revell MP4/12 in 1/24 too.
The MP4/13 was build out of the box with the original kit decals. It's not a really good build by me. Just average.
The MP4/12 is actually better. I modified the front suspension and the button of the chassis to be able to glue the chassis parts together before painting. In addition I got a set of West-decals.
Btw:
These white decals on top of the chassis are a nightmare!
Thank you for looking! :)

And then I realised, I had forgotten the little wings on the top of the sidepods.

Both look good to me, very tricky livery to pull off.

Nice work! I've never done those cars because the decals intimidated me too much. Yours came out great. Really nice especially on that tricky Revell kit.
Call me crazy but I actually prefer the look of the '98 narrow track cars to the wide track cars of '97.

Very nice Builds both :) . You say not your best Work. Well, better than my mp4/13, had a huge Air bubble on top of the Monocoque at the mentioned white area  .

Both are quite nice and well built :D
And the Revell, well it's nice to see what a careful and inspired build can obtain form these unfairly usually treated kits :D

Both McLarens look very good.

These dark color/silver color scheme are not easy to do.

It is quite a difference in size when a 1/24 and a 1/20 model are put side by side. The 1/20 model is so much bigger.

I still like F1 cars in 1/24 so that they can be side by side with my other sports racing cars. Unfortunately, the offer of models kits are very limited.

Thank you for all the comments! :-)
I should probably add that this is the first Revell kit I ever finished. My previous two attempts ended in a disaster.

In general I prefer the look of the 1997 cars, but I completly agree with you here, which might have to do with Adrian Newey who joined McLaren in 1997 and was responsible for the MP4/13.

I had it too on both cars. So I ended up covering both chassis with paper templates and put a few dusty coats of white on top until the central area had a solid white. By using a template made of paper that didn't sticked on the chassis I prevented a visible edge, as parts of the dust went under the template.

Thank you, James!
To be honest, I bought the 1997 Revell F1 kits back when they were released, as I feared I would soon run out of modellkits. ebay didn't existed, and I didn't knew about multimedia kits back then. :-D
