Just read it too, also same feeling. A hero with 14 zeroes but THAT Zeltweg win from Jones.
Mon dieu !! Les Amis francais are having a really hard period... my deepest condolences to all the French F1 community.

Very sad to hear, a brilliant test driver, and very good racing driver. Did so much of the testing work on the Renault LM, and F1 turbo cars. His superb win at Dijon in 1979 is so often overshadowed by the iconic Villeneuve-Arnoux battle for second. His Austrian win in 1980 I think was his finest moment, beating Alan Jones in a straight fight around the mighty Osterreichring was really something special.

It’s curious that you can read in some supposedly documented biographies that he was “outclassed “ by Arnoux in 1980. Honestly big JP was at his peak that year, whenever his RE20 broke he was usually well ahead of Rene. He was a slow burner/ learner but he had reached a great level.

like I said James b , the guy had no luck , and no matter how good you are you need some luck , god they were great years in F1 History ... we older guy's were very lucky to live in this period , alum hand made chassis and hand welded Crome moly A arms etc , the guys had to shift , some still had to clutch ... and on I go!.

Nice picture. I believe I can pick out Laffite and Depailler, but could you identify the rest for us?
