Tyrrell 019 scale 1:20 conversion

Hi all,

I've not been on here for a long time. Life and stuff got in the way and I lost my mojo for modelling. However I haven't been idle. I've still bought some F1 kits for my stash but have been building aircraft models more the last few years.
I do have an F1 project that I want to build as a present for a very dear friend of mine for his 50th birthday this summer. His favourite car has always been the Tyrrell 019 from 1990.
So I bought a partially started Tamiya Braun Tyrrell Honda 020 from 1991 that I intend to convert into the 019. I intend to build this car as a curbside only therefore the engine cover will remain fixed in place.
I am aware that the rear airbox will need cutting and reprofiling in shape to make the slimmer shape. I am happy to do this with some plastic card and filler (though this will be my first kitbash).unless there are any ideas without breaking the bank as I'm budget conscious.

I have done some research and the only decals I can find that may fit are Museum collection for an early season 1991 test car with the Honda engine. So far these are the only decals I think I can use.

Therefore I'm asking for help with the following:
1- Has anyone attempted to build this car before and if so can you share advice or a link?
2 - Are there any other decals or options for the 019 available?

Awesome project.

Its a really significant and neat looking vehicle.

That doesn’t help with decals though… i’m not aware of anything other than the M Coll sheet you refer to.
S27 did a full kit so obviously have the artwork on file, but again, that’s no use.

I never knew about the Rothmans deal, and why they kept the blue and white livery. Every day is a school day!

Hi Ian,
I have the S27 kit if you need a scan of the decals, but it looks like you are sorted on that front.
With regards to differences between the 020 Vs 019, the nose of the 019 is significantly narrower than the 020, and as you say the 019 engine cover is slimmer with more bulges to clear the engine and the spine is straighter.
The 019 is not the best from S27 by far, the pattern maker must have had an off day - as made OOB the bottom edge of the front wing end plates will end up around 15mm high off the floor as the nose is too high from around the cockpit area!
I fixed that but then put it back in the box......

Thanks for the offer to scan the decals but Ill get that set on the previous link. Ill have to research some pictures to see how the nose is slimmer.

Another option if scale is not a concern is the build the Modeler's 1/24 Tyrrell 019. It's a pretty nice kit.
