1/8 W11 7th Championship Commemoration Project

Post by Calibre11 »

Hi all,
I'm looking to build a large scale, 1/8 model of Lewis Hamilton's 2020 Mercedes W11 as a bit of a commemoration to his 7th World Championship title. Where could I find an accurate CAD file for the car? I would be printing the car in pieces, obviously, and assembling it much like a model kit. Is this feasible?

Of course it is. With the help of a fellow member, meaning they are doing all the creation, I am building a Jordan 191 in 1/8. Anything can be done these days. So far the parts look great. Indycals printed the decals and I am using the suspension of a Ferrari 643, including wheels and tires, which is key to making it all work. Your build will be much more complex.

You will not be able to find an accurate CAD file, I think. Unless you ask Mercedes for it, and they oblige.
However, you might be able to export a 3D model from the 2020 F1 game, and use it as your base.
Currently building:
Alfa Romeo 159 (since 2021)
Recently finished:
Renault R30 (since 2010)

Just ask Torsten aka Scaleautofactory.
He is doing stuff that you are searching for.
Don't know how far his project is?
He was doing the W08

Just make a copy of the existing W11 model from New Scratch and scale it up ;)
Not easy but possible...

It will be more effort to make a more detailed model out of it, because you can display a lot more in 1/8 than in 1/20 - which would be the basis in fact of NewScratch.
But here it is simply a matter of looking at pictures and looking at pictures again and again.
It is also important to know which race it should represent, since the cars really do look different in almost every race. I can sing a song of it...
Greetings Thomas

The basic shape is "easy" to extract from the F1-2020 Game:

It will keep you busy to transfrom the exported game ready meshes into 3d printable meshes...
