1990 Purolator Chevrolet (Daytona 500 winner)
Derrike Cope started 12th in this Bob Whitcomb-owned Lumina, leading only 5 laps en route to his first career victory in the series. Cope would win only one more race and it came later the same year at Dover, Delaware.
I started with a first-gen Monogram Lumina. I added sheet styrene extensions to the rear quarter panels and blended all the seams, as well as those at the rear bumper mating areas. I replaced the kit exhaust dumps with aluminum tubing to more closely resemble the car as it raced that day. Stenciled tire logos, an aluminum tubing fuel overflow and photoetched hood pins round out the mods. Paint is Tamiya TS-36 over Krylon gloss white, topped with Duplicolor Acrylic Lacquer clear. I opted to mask and paint all the checkers as opposed to using decal. Despite all the extra work, I think it yielded a better final result. A lot of sanding, polishing, and waxing followed.
Sourcing all the decals was a challenge. The numbers and main sponsor logos are JNJ and were as tempermental as I expected they would be; I pretty much knew what I'd be getting into. All the clear portions were yellow-brown when they released from the backing and I had to gently "scrub" them to remedy this. Then there was some cracking and lack of adhesion. Once again, decal solvent and patience took care of most of it. The small contingencies were from a Powerslide Skoal Olds sheet and a few different kits. I had to make a couple of small accuracy concessions but I don't think they're too obvious.
Overall, this one came out better than I thought it would despite the decal shortcomings.
Thank you for looking,
G
Brief buildup etc.

Pure oil now...
Pure oil later.

I remember how shocked I was to see him win that 500. And seems like it was yesterday! Looks great Duke!

Having just completed a nascar build, well waiting on the tire decals which should arrive today, I'm embarrassed to show it on here now. That's a stunning paint job with the checkers. Looks great.

Nice build...I remember that race! Dale Earnhardt was leading and ran over something.
