Group 5 Group Build
Group 5 Build, AKA Group 5uild
Hello everyone,
Apologies if there is a more formal process for this - but I'd like to get a new group build going! Inspired by conversations between myself, JamesB, sky1911, and chaparral2k in the What is Your Latest Model Purchase? thread, this would be a group build for the legendary Group 5 silhouette cars.
I figured we could it'd be just for 4th Generation Group 5 cars (1876-1982) - the silhouette cars we really know Group 5 for. There were so many brilliant cars, and a pretty wide selection of kits to choose from.
As for rules, started kits would be fine. Just don't post something previously completed. We can do WIPs in response to this thread, and I can put the entries and the latest photo from each entry in this first post. We will run this group build until the drop of the green flag of Le Mans, Saturday, September 19, 2020.
So who's in?

Re: Group 5 Group Build
Pardon my ignorance (again), but is the Ford Capri, like Zakspeed or other livery a Group 5 car?

Absolutely! There's also Porsche 935s, BMW 320 Turbo, Lancia Beta Monte Carlo, Ferrari 512BB LM, Greenwood Corvette, BMW 3.0/3.5 CSL, Lancia Stratos HF, and a bunch of cars from Japan.tubegenius wrote:Pardon my ignorance (again), but is the Ford Capri, like Zakspeed or other livery a Group 5 car?

Re: Group 5 Group Build
I'll get the ball rolling with my entry: the Alexander Calder BMW 3.0 CSL Art Car.
The kit is the Arii 3.5 CSL in 1/24. I started this a few days ago and have the body together. Chassis and paint is still to come. I know the front splitter is not correct for the Calder car, but I haven't been able to find a conversion piece yet. So I'll build it as-is, and if I ever find the correct splitter I'll cut the current one off and replace it.

Re: Group 5 Group Build
Thanks for the reply. My very first new car, bought at age 20, was a Capri. In the U.S. they were sold at Mercury dealerships. I've been in love with them ever since.

Re: Group 5 Group Build
I have the Airfix 1/24 BMW 3,5CSL that i wanted to build as a Ronnie Peterson ride. I got decals for Peterson/Nilson car of 1976 but I don't like that scheme. I prefer the thin stripes on the white car. But on the other hand, it is both Peterson and Nilsson.

Re: Group 5 Group Build
Anything similar to an Audi Quattro E2
if it has boxes on the wheel arches, it's most probably a Gr. 5 (except the Quattro!! )
Anyway, check at racingsportscars.com where you'll find great info, listed by brands, models, races, seasons...
Ah! there are LB Celicas, Even Escorts Mk II, Seat 124s!!! (watch out spanish members), surely the Lancia Beta Montecarlo, even M1s....
ED:
BTW thanks Jake!
May I suggest the governing body to migrate here the posts we put on the "latest purchases" thread?
So, Jake, restoring (rebuilding) of old built models would do? that would boost my potential commitment from 1 to 4!!
I think that the Airfix and the Marui look different cars, aside of being clearly two different "levels" of exploiting Gr.5 rules. I tried, but 1/25 vs 1/24 would not justify the size differences. I'll check the measures you say, lets see...
There's a big chunk of difference on wheelbase, noticeable, but smaller ones on nose/tail lengths and then subtle discrepancies on te widths....

THanks Roman!!!sky1911 wrote:James, I wouldn't know, but you could try measuring the length, width and wheelbase of the models. I don't have the exact figures for the racing CSL, but I would think that it should be rather close to the stock model in terms of wheelbase and maybe length (front of grille to back of boot lid (discounting spoilers and spolier lip).
Dimensions:From what I can find, the length and width change slightly over the duration (or I found different values - which is not to say that they didn't shrink or grow - Cali 6mph bumper regulations or whatever as possible causes come to mind).Code: Select all
basic E9 (series): length: 466 cm, width: 167 cm, height: 137 cm, wheelbase: 262.4 cm. E9 3.0 CSL (1973): length: 463 cm, width: 173 cm, height: 137 cm, wheelbase: 262.5 cm. E9 3.5 CSL (1975): length: 467.4 cm, width: 177.8 cm, height: 137 cm, wheelbase: 262.5 cm.
On the subject of 1/24 CSLs.. there are some more to be found on fleabay at this time, from Nitto Kagaku (3 different version), Nichimo (2 versions), Otaki, Arii and Provence Moulage (1 version each). Maybe branch of into a separate topic in Group builds?
That aside, I've bought a Roden Fokker DR.1 (601) - as apparently Wingnut Wings went belly up due to things happening in the world right now and so their own DR.1 model may or may not see the light of day - and am expecting to take delivery of it by the weekend.

Re: Group 5 Group Build
I think restoring an old model or picking up a "Shelf of Doom" model that has been sitting for a while should definitely count!JamesB wrote:
