L. SCARFIOTTI MEMORIAL EVENT - TRIBUTE TO ELIO DE ANGELIS
How time flies…unfortunately! It was 17th June of this year when this event took place and I was taking pictures. I said to myself that the following day I would be posting them on this forum…
Lodovico Scarfiotti was an italian F1 drivers during the 60s, he only won the Italian Grand Prix in 1966, the only Italian driver to do so. Every year in the small town where he lived, Potenza Picena there is a memorial event for him, and other than him being remembered, there is also a tribute to some other driver. 2017 was dedicated to Elio de Angelis, for the occasion his brother Roberto, few motor racing journalists, and Lotus Classic Cars were there too. I also spotted and talked to two other F1 drivers there: Beppe Gabbiani and Emanuele Pirro!
The Lotus cars arrived quite late at the scene because the road up the hill leading to the center of this town was quite a challenge for the driver, when the huge truck arrived surprisingly Clive Chapman jumped off the truck and helped to unload the two “black monsters”:
Lotus 88B
Lotus type 91
Other than that, there were two other single seaters driven by Elio in his earlier career in Italian F3, a Chevron and a Ralt. In total 4 cars were on display.
It was a cool setting, you could get really close to the cars, Emanuele Pirro climbed in to the 88B and asked tips to Clive Chapman as he would be driving one later in the day in the streets nearby.
But let the pictures do the talking:
more pictures in the next post...

Hi Corpse'...
I'm taking an educated guess this event was at Lotus Wymondham Norfolk.
I have friends who live in Norfolk, we visit them every year. We spend a few
days in Cromer first, travelling up the A11 then the A140 to get there. Every
year we fully intend to visit both Snetterton and Lotus. So far we've only
managed Snetterton. Thanks for posting. Perhaps next year!!!

Hi Tiffoc, no this event was not in the UK, but in central Italy. The town is Potenza Picena and is where the 60s F1 driver Scarfiotti lived, that is why they have this kind of event each year. The guys from Lotus drove back to England the same afternoon, I guess back to their base in Norfolk!

I'm glad you were able to get so close, to four pieces of motorsport history! And got to see Clive and the others. What a great afternoon that must've been.
Thanks for all the photos. Great model-building references. I didn't know the 88B exhausts pointed out "staggered/ crooked" till just now.
Cheers, Chris
