GB Complete: Tamiya 1/20th Lotus 79 “Ronnie’s Last Win”

Post by generationx »

I could have put this in the normal “Completed” section, or the Lotus 79 section, but by pure coincidence the Group Build is on-going so here we are.

Well we all know about this kit now. It is a pure demonstration of Tamiya’s skill at making a beautifully engineered kit. The only problem I had was the fit of the engine cover, and I think that is due to the aftermarket trumpets. Oh yes and some of the side pod decals have silvered a bit but that’s down to my crappy paintwork…!

The kit is basically Out Of The Box, with the addition of the Tamiya p/e set, some Tabu decals and the Tuner Model Factory intake trumpets. As I said, a beautiful kit to build, and a true icon to put on the shelf.

Have to ask what decals did you use? The FIA needs to take a look at cars like this. Look sooo much better than todays cars.

The JPS decals are from a Tabu fill-in sheet, the Badyears also. The tyre decals were spares from a Tabu M23 fill-in sheet, and the extra (incorrect colour and size!) winner garland on the rear wing was from the Tabu, for Hasegawa, fill-in set. So a fair mix'n'match!

And yes, far more beautiful than any modern F1 offering.

Very cool car…I am feeling old today, I guess. I still remember the little chill I'd get when one of these would pop over the brow of a hill and you would see that totally cool profile as it screamed towards you on the tv screen….I'm going to have one of those on my shelf someday!

Lotus 79's are like buses?! Nothing for months and suddenly two on the same day :P Nice model, and I particularly like how you highlighted the dash.

Nice build, Generation. One of these will be on my shelves one day, too.

Too bad about the decal silvering. I don't suppose you want to dare trying to cut that out. You could take a fresh, very sharp blade, and with a very steady hand and almost no knife pressure, cut out the clear bits around the lettering. That would remove the silvered areas. And some well watered down white (wood / Elmer's) glue, and a damp warm cloth 30 minutes later, could be used to press down any letters that seemed in danger of peeling off the body. That's my work-around.

But I wouldn't want to suggest you try anything you're not used to doing.

Thanks for sharing. She's still a handsome car!
Cheers,
Chris
