Carbon Fibre Decals - Recommendations

Post by pbrowne »

I have heard about Scale Motorsports carbon fibre decals.

https://scalemotorsport.com/collections ... ber-decals

They look OK but have heard about the decals breaking up. Any recommendations for these or others? This is for 1/20.

I haven't had any bad experiences with it yet.
But I also use the Tamiya CF decals (12679 - 12682) a lot.

Is this also for the MP4/4?
Studio27 offers a set of cf-decals specially designed for this car. It has the advantage you don't have to do templates yourself and that's going to save you quite some time. I have used their Leyton House CG901B and for me it worked fine.

Scale Motorsport CF decals are the best I have used. All you need is a hairdryer and some Micro-Set and your good to go. Patience helps too :)

I really like the Tamiya product, settles very nicely. I like that you can buy it as full sheets rather than a templated sheet for just one kit. I find the templated sheets a good idea but very expensive for just a single kit.

I use Microscale carbon fiber decals for my cars. It is easy to apply.

I find both Microscale and Scale Motorsport decals a bit too silvery to my liking. I spray Tamiya smoke over the Microscale decal to tone it down.

Funny thing is I have the Scale Motorsport and Tamiya decals and haven't use them yet. I have several sheets of Microscale decals that I bought at 5 Cdn$ and have not finished them.

I like the Tamiya decal more as it has the right contrast that I prefer.

I have had some issues in the past with Scale Motorsport which I easily attributed to the age of the decals themselves. Since getting fresh sets, I have had no issues whatsoever (other than the obvious user errors). I have used Tamiya's as weel, but seem to keep coming back to SM.

My experience is that the Scale Motorsports CF decals will conform to even the most contorted surfaces really well using some MicroSol. I do agree with CK - their finish is sometimes a bit too silvery and I also tone them down with smoke acrylic paint and sometimes a flat coat as well to dull the shine. In addition, from a distance they appear a bit too diagonal-line-looking in their pattern, but the smoke coat helps this. My preferred option is to mix and match with Scale Motorsports, Tamiya, and ST27 on the same car as the real cars will often have multiple CF patterns used - in particular the RedToros are often unidirectional (UD) carbon fiber and sometimes that massive checkerboard weave as well on the floors and bodywork.

I use pretty much all decals available in my builds. So Far I really like SMS and Studio 27. I really can't recommend Decalscas...they are thick like cardboard ;)
About breaking/brittle SMS decals that's a problem with "age". Chances are very high that old sets will break. Had that happen nearly everytime I use older sets...couple of years old. Other than that they are great. I use a lot of Microset/sol and and very hot hairdryer to virtually melt the decal down...takes some patience and practice

Interesting infos on the decalcas ones, i have some in my stash especially for motorcycles, sounds like i`m having a hard time to bring them down cause the cowlings are curved in any direction.
Take a stand!
