Looking for Alfa 159 reference

Post by BMW »

Hi all

I am trying to build Fangio's Alfa Romeo 159 of the Swiss Grand Prix in 1951
But as I am building the olde Revival / Casadio kit, I need lots of reference.

The suspension in the kit is completely bonkers, having nothing to do with the real car. The bodywork (particularly the floor) also seems wrong, just as there missing parts (the winglets behind the front wheels the driver from flying stones etc.)

So I am searching for: which car did Fangio drive in Bremgarten in 1951?
Formula 1 car by car just specifies a 159 without deDion tube.

Can someone scan the MFH manual, or take some pictures of the suspension and the underside of their model? :)

I have found the follwing photos which I think (!) show the car in action:
Note: The angled rear end, and the single exhaust pipe.

There a good few pictures showing the surviving Alfa 158/159 in museums, but I struggle to identify the exact car, and also as mentioned, see the lower bodywork...

There are many pictures in the usual reference books by Nye, McDonough, Cimarosti and on the web. The problem is that the specification changed frequently - 158, 159 (supposedly an engine spec not a chassis spec) 159A, 159M - and I believe the cars were stripped after each race and the parts re-assembled as required, so no reliable chassis history.

I was afraid this was the case :)
I don't even need so much a chassis history, I just want to build something that is reasonably believable :)

Motorsport in Detail were releasing photo reference CDs some years back and Volume #55 covered Fangio's Alfa 159 in detail.

Their web site is no longer active so the second hand market would probably be your only option for a copy.

Thanks for that, looking though the photos here and elsewhere I can see I have a tall order ahead of me to build something reasonable. :)
