A number of posts on here have pointed out that kit manufacturers have to make a profit, so they will not do subjects that will not sell in large numbers, such as 1950s and 1960s Grand Prix cars. If you look on kit suppliers websites, you can get a Renault 4 van [Ebbro], Willys Jeep [Italeri], VW Beetle [Tamiya], Volvo 760GLE [Italeri] and many, many more suchlike, all with rubber tyres and many with photoetch [which is pretty good for wire wheels! So I don't buy these excuses.

If people only buy cars that they rememer, then how come people still buy scores of Tiger tanks and WWI Fokkers and Camels? Modeling must a very healthy hobby if we get to be that old. To say nothing of the chaps that are building wooden sail ships! ;)

But maybe there is something to it. The 1950s are also a rare topic in F1 forums. Most people tend to discuss the 1980s onwards, as that is what they remember watching, and so have both an opinion, and a connection to those days.

And also, most of the 1950s cars were run by either major manufacturers like Ferrari, Lancia, Mercedes etc. which are reluctant to give licence rights, we know, or by defunct privateers like BRM, Wanwall and Cooper, and the rights to these might be owned by various trusts, who's only goal is to bleed their heritage dry.

Oh well, rubbish Revival models or expensive MFH models it is then :(

Personally I would love to see more of the 1930s and up F-1 cars done in 1/20 to modern standards, Buggatti, Alfa Romeo and so on. As far as wire wheels, They can tool them, they might not be perfect but aftermarket can step in for the perfectionists.

I absolutely love 50's F1 models! I've been trying to collect as many 1/24 kits as I can get a hold of and building them. I've built the Merit Connaught, Vanwall, and Ferrari D50. I understand there's a Strombecker Maserati 250F out there and a Protar Merc W196. Also have a Heller Talbot Lago and a Smer Alfa 158, which is the Merit kit reboxed a million times.

Ah, the old Merit kits...
I had the Smer Lago-Talbot and the Alfa 159 (who did not), with its transparent discs acting as the wire spokes...
They were what got me into this mess.

You made some excellent models, Delatraz. A silk purse out of a sow's ear. :)
