The Swedish GP winning P34?

Post by Orso »

I never looked into the 1976 version of the P34 as I don't like the yellow stripes.
I did build the test car of Ronnie though but now I'm considering building the winning car from the 1976 Swedish GP.
Can the 1/20 scale kit be built without modifications?

Looking at pictures I found something that need to be added.

There are holes that has to be added on the cowling and then covered with gaffa tape.

The Swedish P34 also has windows in the sides, that were not provided in the normal Tamiya release. :(
I made windows in mine by grinding away the plastic from the back, and gluing some transparent plastic in.
Currently building:
Alfa Romeo 159 (since 2021)
Recently finished:
Renault R30 (since 2010)

Not provided in the kit ?? I have never seen a P34 kit without the side window ?? What am I missing ?
As far as I know there has never been a P34 kit without the windows..

The holes in front under the number 3 were made only on Scheckters car during the Monaco GP..next GP was Sweden, the holes were still there but been taped off. After this they were never seen again

Orso,if you do not like the yellow stripes you can make Scheckters Italian GP car..He had no yellow stripes on his car..In practice he used the large wing as seen on this picture but on race day he drove the normal wing as per kit

Alex.

I was thinking of doing the "odd ones" that won the Swedish GP. Tyrrell P34 and the Brabham BT46B

I think basically the Tamiya P34 is quite close to the version raced in Sweden.
Apart from the holes there is also a small scrutineering decal by the Swedish Organizers that could be found on every car in that event. I don’t know if it is available by any decalmaker.

You are right! I have been inhaling too much glue, I think!

Thanks for the informations. The holes will make the build a little trickier but also a small difference to the other car that I built.
I had forgot about the scrutiny decal. I did drew this decal for some other builds. I just hope I managed to print them out before my ALPS printer died.
It is a bit funny, if I go through with this build it will be the third P34 with the #3. It will also be the third car that I have to add Gaffa tape to.
It is a good thing that the 1977 version kit has all the 1976 body parts included so I can mess up three times making those holes.
