Documentation on the Matra Sports MS11 1968 Formula-1 car
Hello everybody,
Introduction:
I'm new here, so I'll introduce myself: Erik, 53 years old from The Netherlands. I'm a long-time modeler but mostly active in aircraft (1/48th & 1/32nd, WW II to modern jets), some (tracked) military vehicles and 1/350th warships from the past odd 130 years. I do have quite some Formula-1- and motorbike models in my stash so I'd like to give them a go too...
Question:
Not long ago I've bought the 1/12 Ebbro re-pop of the old Tamiya 1/12 Matra MS11. Needless to say the model can't be on the cutting edge of injection moulding, being introduced to the market in 1969. Therefore I'm looking for information/documentation on the details in the footwell and the wiring/piping of the engine and electrics. The kit provides the coolant pipes and hoses but not the different hoses for the engine (and gearbox?) oil. I'd also like to know how the routing for the cables, hoses and wiring for the accelerator, clutch, brake pedals, instrumentation and electrical switches goes. Out of the box, it is possible to build a very attractive model of this car but to take it a notch up in this scale, one really needs to add the wiring and hoses.
Can someone help me with this? A good starting point could be the instructions for the Model Factory Hiro instructions for their 1/20 model. I have seen a fuzzy scan of 1 of the pages of their instructions and it looked like at least the oil hoses were included in it.
Thanks for your help in advance!
Cheers, Erik.

Unless Ebbro redid the chassis moulding, adding footwell detail and pedal cables will require cutting out the old AA battery casing and then doing a fair amount of fabrication of all the parts that are not represented in the kit given the initial design for an electric motor!
If you can't find good free examples on this site or the net, there is a build detail for pay download.

YMMV with Modelersite articles, some are great, some less so.
It is a beautiful subject and that Matra engine is a beast.
Maybe someday Ebbro could also do a proper Cosworth conversion for Jackie Stewart's championship car.
Good luck!

Hi Erik,
I built that model 37 years ago.
If you want to see it go to this link:

Thanks! And BTW, Ebbro/Tamiya didn’t change the bodywork. I noticed the strange boxy shape on the floor earlier and found it odd. Now I understand that it was for batteries... Ah, the 60’s and 70’s with their gimmicks and motorization....
I also read the article from Modelersite. Oh man, did that modeler modify the kit parts!.... I thought I could be in for a fairly quick build, looking at the parts count and the general shapes of the parts. He took it to another level and seeing as how fine a replica it turned out, I now know I can’t be happy with a mostly out-of-the-box build.
Maybe it’s wise to first build my 1/20 Tamiya McLaren-Mercedes to get comfortable again to the world of slick high gloss paint schemes and carbon parts as opposed to the world of 1/32 camouflage paintjobs, oil-leaking Rolls-Royce Merlins or heat stained afterburner nozzles! We’ll see!
Cheers, Erik.

Re: Documentation on the Matra Sports MS11 1968 Formula-1 car
Hi Erik. The skills of the folks here can be intimidating but also hopefully also inspiring if only to cause me to take something out of the stack and build it, hopefully to completion and without worrying too much that it won't measure up to the results from the more skilled and determined modelers who post on the site.
My guess is that the Matra may a perfect starting point as it will go together more like a WW II plane or armor than the latest F1 kits which do need a lot of carbon fibre masking and a perfect finish to look authentic.
Another starting point might be the other Ebbro historical kits in 1/20 -- the little F2 Brabham looks really sharp. The various Lotus 49s go together pretty well except for the front cowling which is too snug a fit over the radiator.

You should take a look at these link, the best MS11 build i have seen over the years, tons of scratch build parts to turn it into a scale model!
