Which tires are which?

Post by tubegenius »

Hi folks. I'm doing a spring cleaning/inventory of my stash. I was surprised to find some with missing tires, some with extra tires, and a box of "assorted" tires. I'm referring to later Tamiya 1/20 tires. Can anyone tell me which of the following are interchangeable: Tyrrell 023, Tyrrell 020, Jordan 191, Benetton B188 and B192, March CG901B, Lotus 99T, Williams FW-11 and FW-13b, Ferrari F-189, McLaren MP4/4 and 4/5b, and Lotus 102B, 102D, 107, and 107B. I think I have enough to cover all my kits, but not sure what goes where. Thanks in advance for your help. :D

Tyrrell 020, Jordan 191 and Lotus 102B should be the same.
Benetton 192 and Lotus 102D and 107 should be the same one.
Williams FW13b, Leyton House CG901B and McLaren MP4/5b should be the same.
McLaren MP4/4 and Benetton 188 are the same.

Lotus 107B and Tyrrell 023 should be smaller because of 1993/1995 saison.

I am not sure with Lotus 99T and FW11 because of saison 1987 / 1986.

Edit:
The 99T are definitely even smaller in diameter compared to the B192. The width is the same. I only compared the front tires.

I have been looking for a database on F1 tires myself for a long time, but I haven't really found anything good...
Greetings Thomas

Years ago when I was developing tires for the Tamiya 1/20 range of kits I measured the wheels of every Tamiya kit to compare sizes. This is what I found. First the Tyrrell 020 used Pirelli tires. that is the only kit in the Tamiya line that used them so those are a one off tire set. The following kits all used the same set of tires from Tamiya. Williams FW11, Lotus 99T, Benetton B188, McLaren MP4/4, Ferrari F189 Early and Late, Williams FW13B, McLaren MP4/5B, Leyton House CG901B, Lotus 102B, Jordan 191, Lotus 102D, McLaren MP4/7 Benetton B192 & the Lotus 107. The following kits all used the same set of tires from Tamiya.Lotus 107B, McLaren MP4/8, Tyrrell 023 & the Ferrari 310B. The following kits all used the same set of tires from Tamiya. McLaren MP4/13, Ferrari F-2000, Ferrari F-2001, & Williams FW24 even though the previous three used Bridgestones and the Williams used Michelins Tamiya used the same tire with different markings. I hope this helps

Hi

Ok. What is described by Derek is correct according to me

Sorry if there is a misunderstanding but I think there is a confusion with
MP4/13 F2000-F2001 and FW24
MP4/13 has 3 lines on the front tires : ‘98 spec
F2000 F2001 have 4 lines on the front tires : ‘99 to ‘03 Bridgestone shape
And FW24 the Michelin with its specific shape and 4 lines on the front

Bye

According to Wikipedia, GY supplied tires in same size from 1981 to 1992. The front is 25.0"x10.0"-13" and rear 26.0"x15.0-13". These have white logo on the sidewall. The rear tire from 1993 was reduced to 13" in width. These have yellow logo on sidewall.

I measure the tire for Jordan 191 without the rims.
Rear: diameter - 1.3" (33 mm)
width - 0.88" (22.4 mm)
Front: diameter - 1.18" (30 mm)
width - 0.63" (16 mm)

Never trust Wikipedia for this fine detail things!!! :D
I also became a forced tyre guru for similar reasons as Derek!
To begin with, Tamiya did carryover old tyres for every kit previous to 1986 FW11. So some are accurate and some not. Rear balloon tyres are huge for FW07 and BT50. RE30B tyres are good for a T3 but not so for the '82 Renault. They should have more roundish sjoulders. BT50's front GY is nice and also useful for cars from mid 1979 (there was a size increase) to 1985. Wiki says that but what is true is that RULES were the same (almost). Though those were maximums, that tyre makers did not always take wholy. ALso rememver there was the dawn of 15" rims and tyres. Tamiya NEVER did any of those, and AFAIK, no plastic kit maker. S27 does have them, though not always acurate, as they are too big.
15" started in 1980, and was widely used till 1983, first front tyres, then all around. By Michelin, GY and Pirelli. They disappeared almost completely and all of a sudden by 1984. Though they would be seen sometimes.
Hard to find official data as there was a lot of trials. For instance, late 1982 Michelin tried narrower rears to improve top speed for Wattie and Niki. If you find a close up pic where the tyre specs are on the sidewall, keep it!!!
Anywa, what Derek said is correct and basically you can mix tyres from 1986 to 1992, from 1993 to 1997, 1998 stand alone, and then 1999 till the end of grooved tyres era.
Anyway when you have doubts, take a good side pic of a car, where yu can see sharply the edges of rim. MAke a rule-of-three with your target rim (usually 17.8mm for 13 inch) and voila you have tyre overall diameter. For widths, front pics where you van refer to front wing width (150cm till 1992, 140 onwards) will give you tyre widths. Same rear... not too hard to find rear wing width depending on year. 110cm till 1982, 100 from 1983 till 2008.

I always knew about some tires differences from 1986 to 1992 it was always clear to me the same tire and from 1993 to 1997 is the same.

The confusion was from 1979 to 1984....many different tires and wheels, I am still not so familiar with those ones.

You pointed exactly the tricky period... it's basically a "case by case" thing... I experienced that when I prepared the tyres for the 1979 Ligier at 1/12... The Ligiers themselves, for instance, tried different sizes in 1980. THere are pics of them in Austria where rear tyres look like doughnuts. I had lots of info of that... should put it all together one day! wheels (rims) are just two: 13" and 15". THat said there were so many styles.
