Tamiya 1/12 1973 Yardley McLaren, Peter Revson

Post by F1FANRH »

Hello everyone, well I thought I would jump in and post my 1st WIP on this most wonderful Forum. 8)
For that subject, I selected this for that project: Tamiya's newest release of the great F1 racing machine known as the McLaren.
Subject Matter: 1973 Peter Revson British Grand Prix win, his first.
Now as the kit I have comes.......a M23 1974 version I needed to replace a few items, ie: decals as in kit not what I needed, but did get them thru Indycals.
I also needed to change the Airbox as in the kit to the one that was on the 1973 racer.......for that, Mac's Modeling had just what I needed and a few tid bits of other parts to help correct the version as kitted by Tamiya.
I also ordered some items from RB Motion.
Have been searching the web for all the info and details I can find for this, of which, there is some, but not alot f/this racer. :|
I will post photos soon, will start with the mono-coupe, I have studied and believe that slipping the drivers tub in thru the rear is the best way to do this after gluing up the main body for the car.

I understand the wheel base is a tad short for the 105" WB of the 73, British GP.
Can anyone offer a tip as to how to do this, I understand what to do, but how much of a filler block on the trans front housing do I need to add to correct.

The question of M23 wheelbase lengths has been discussed here before, see: http://www.f1m.com/forums/viewtopic.php ... er#p153450
You will also need the earlier rear wing and bent pylon for your car which can be found on eBay by searching under 'McLaren M23 parts'; the pylon needs a bit of work to reshape the rear half to a more aerofoil shape but is otherwise OK.

David

Thanks David, found the parts on eBay, bought the one that was f/B Parts......looks like what you said and that part is now added to the mods for this version. They are coming from Japain.
Again, thanks for the help, I did not even notice that until you pointed it out about the pylon/wing.

I went ahead and bought the Airbox sprue as well, I have ordered the resin version, but the airbox came with the top of the cowling as well and might be a better fit since it is a Tamiya part f/the model!

It will be interesting to follow this build as I did a similar one (albeit for the Canadian GP) not long after attending the race!

Ah those were the days when you could easily sneak into the pit area without credentials and photograph the cars to your heart's content!

Many and I mean many years ago, I use to go to the Nurmberg Ring track and you could walk around and photo all the cars too your hearts content..........Now,I live in the Home Area f/NASCAR......I live less than 30 min's from CMS.......you have to have a special pass to even get near the pits and to get that pass cost a pretty penny.
Oh how times have changed.
