MP4/4 SpeedBuild
Off the shelf and onto the grid with it. Starting an OOB of Tamiya's 1:20 kit. Only addition is a driver figure sourced from another kit and some Tabu decals. I started by grinding away some of the driver (he came from an F-189) Perhaps Enzo's cars were roomier, but I had to remove a lot of plastic around the shoulders and arms to squeeze him in. I also began painting the shell. I like the way Tamiya scribes fine lines in the body to help mask the paint, but I find that by the time I prime, sand and paint the first color I have trouble seeing the lines. To solve this, I started by using a light grey primer on the areas that would be flouro red. After removing the masking tape, I sprayed Tamiya white primer over everything. It is transparent enough that the grey still shows through.

Re: MP4/4 SpeedBuild
After the white primer I shot it with 4 coats of Tamiya pure white. Again it was just transparent enough for my to easily see where to mask for the red color. I also cut the nose off to attach permanently, leaving the rest of the body removable.

After four coats of TS-36... I like this paint! It went on smooth and covered well.

Re: MP4/4 SpeedBuild
Looks good so far, funny how those two simple colours work so well on an F1 cars bodywork.

Re: MP4/4 SpeedBuild
Beautiful paint job. I was a little nervous when reading your WIP about the grey primer affecting the red, but it worked great . Very nice solution to the problem.

Re: MP4/4 SpeedBuild
Me too-after I masked for the red, I hit it one more time with pure white, both to seal the tape edge, and to cover the grey. It's a simple enough paint scheme that I'm not sure it was worth the extra steps...

Re: MP4/4 SpeedBuild
Nice job on the spraying of the two colours. I admire your use of TS-36, not the easiest route in my opinion. Many times I have tried with it myself and many times it's ended in disaster... I just don't know why but TS-36 and I don't get on...

Re: MP4/4 SpeedBuild
At the end of one week: Paint on: most decals done as well. Starting to assemble the tub and other pieces. I'm basically an impatient builder- I like getting them done.
