2009 group build: 1962 BRM P57 'stackpipe'...

Post by Mr.Grumpy »

ok, here is my 2009 group build project, graham hill's championship car from 1962, the BRM P57 stackpipe as raced in the dutch GP. kit is 1/43 and is from SMTS.

what a beauty:

P56 or P57?

typical kit from SMTS, a challenge but a nice looking kit.

nothing to it:

very nice casting of the body:

not a lot of PE work here:

the famous stackpipes, lezdep (sergey) has offered his assistance in helping me upgrade this very unique part of F1 history, hopefully we can pull it off.

i'm anticipating reference pics and working out exactly what green to use will be a problem, any thoughts you may have on this will help. and in case you haven't worked out how this ties into the theme: it's from the 60's!

What a real "classic" and what a noise that engine made!

just some initial 'messing around' has been done with the kit and already i can see many areas to improve/fix/upgrade/correct.

more to come.

some more progress:

test fitted and cleaned up most of the parts:
Image

going to replace the anti roll bar (broken in transit), and the roll hoop. not happy with the fit of the mesh engine cover so that will be replaced.
Image

another shot of the ill-fitting mesh screen:
Image

going to replace the shocks as well with tameo replacement parts. wish i could do more with the suspension but i just don't have the talent/parts to do a full scratch job on it and the kit parts are pretty good anyway:
Image

discovered that the kit i have came with 4 rear wheels (packaging error). a quick email to keith at SMTS sorted that out and he's sending me the fronts.

more to come...

still looking for any photo reference if anyone can help me out.

I found this picture in the book "The Complete Book of Formula One" by Simon Arron and Mark Hughes. The car almost looks black to me.

some more progress:

primed most of the parts:
Image

the car has an air scoop that in my opinion should have been molded with the body but wasn't. the kits comes with a cast part that i was finding very hard to clean up and make look right so i decided to make one out of brass sheet:
Image

i've never really done this sort of thing before and was a little skeptical of being able to bend it properly:
Image

in the end i think it worked out ok and was a fun exercise also replaced the mesh screen kit part and scratched my own. looks pretty good too. not quite there yet with it, but almost:
