Gr.Build JamesB Copersucar F6A

Post by JamesB »

Don't know if you have, in english, a particular joke abouth these situations where one thing leads to another, you begin finding a captain cap on the street and end up building a boat...
That's similar. One of the f1m members asked me to do a set of decals for him, I made also print one set for me, just in case. As I found there was no car that looked similar enough to the one where the decals go, I started modifying a resin FW07 body... The rest is in pictures!.
Material was added to the nose. Plastic sidewalls added helped. Windscreen of FW07 was shoveled, the suspension fairings too, so I can add the proper ones without being conditioned.
Also the engine cover is treated: firt the fuel cell is narrowed on its lower part, so walls are almost vertical. Intake trumpets zone is also modified. Oh yes the roll bar fairing was also shoveled!!

OK, let's finish with engine cover before being back to the nose.
Engive cover has two slope degrees, upper section is almost vertical, while lower zone is more inclined. The separation line is seen here before carving the mayterial on lower part. Later we'll add a plastic triangle on the fuel cell. This feature is typical of those days cars...

Back to nose.
Well, I initially though that modifying slightly the 07's nose would be enough. LAter I saw that the F6A nose is muuuuch longer. So a strange putty I found was used. Then I saw it wasn't strong enough. I covered with Tamiya putty. OK, but then sides were horrible and I did not trust the stability of putty under Tamiya one. So a coat of 1 or 2mm of brown two component putty was added. Rigid and strong. Then back to the pics: Oh hell! nose is short yet, and the chassis lacks 1mm in heigth!!!
So I added a lower plastic face that'd help making the nose longer and would manage a smooth finish. Then more brown putty was used. Sanding, etc and here we are. You can see the separation between the two stepd of putty...
Yes the colored sidewalls plastic is from old cloth detergent box. It's polistyrene!!

Together with all this, sidepods are developed. Lower faces will help doing a longer wheelbase car, sidepods side panels are drawed from pics, they include the skirts. A very thin plastic sheet will be added later on this so it lets show the skirts protruding underneath. I like the car sitting actually on the skirts: it's acurate and anyway eliminates the ride heigth problems...  provided I get it righ when glueing the sidewalls in place!! :D
Also sidepods front ends are considerably lowered. It might not be exact, but certainly close to reality. Radiator exits will be treated later. here you see paper mock ups on them. Oh yes lower suspensions front attachment points' little fairings were also done. As I mentioned, before cementing sidewalls I check taht evry point is same heigth right and left, with a caliper... I do it on a thick glass plate.

Now it's time to make the suspension fairings. Since it's 6mm thick at scale, I'll use three levels of 2mm plastic. The leading step is the upper one. It reproduces the overall shape and it's got a slope change when it changes from rectanle to triangle shape. I'll add the lower steps and fill with putty. I match parts back to back so the front end slope is the same. A bit aguessing game. I was lucky. Then we present them to the chassis after calculating roughly where they go. I had considered doing them withg thin plastic sheet... but it's a complex part and I'd rather sand a solid block than doing it all again. I check heigths also... Radiator exits are halfway they modification too...

You busy man!!! Very impressive scratch building skills. I won't be trying anything like this myself but I can definitely take away some ideas and tips from this. Thanks for sharing!

Looking good James!

It's certainly a lot further on than my project, but seeing your progress is getting me motivated to get over the issues that have stopped me in my tracks :?

Keep it up

Thanks for all the compliments, guys! :)
Here's another update. As you see on the drawing, the fairings have a problem: while the measure "A" is allright, "B" between fairing top and the rounded edge of the nose is too big, while "C" is almost correct but a bit low. I'll have to dettach the fairings and cut them so I can put them more or less with the same A measure, but certainly raising it at the front as the curved arrow shows. Then the front triangular bits will be replaced, a bit higher at their front and particularly more raised at the back, making a less flat fairing, closer to the node lateral edge at its central section.
Pictures follow, and more explanations are given there.
Thanks for looking :)
