Lotus 107 WIP (Group Build 2008)

Post by Brooklin1 »

Building a Tamiya Lotus 107 for the 2008 Group Build.

This is my first WIP here, so be gentle.

As usual, I'm ignoring the assembly instructions and starting wherever I want. Usually the interior or the wheels.

I tried something different this time with the 'fabric'. I used woodworking 'flour'. That is stuff that collects in a hand sander dustbag when sanding wood. It's a lot finer that sawdust. I've think I've also heard of people using actual baking flour for texture. I didn't have any fabric paint like Modelers. Maybe next time.

very nice, I'm very curious how you will tackle the challenging paint/decalsheme. Looking forward , it's such a beautiful car.

Daniel (and Brooklin1, if you were worried) - I am coincidentally busy with a 107B. The paint scheme is admittedly nightmarish (the B has to be painted white and decalled the rest of the way) but the decals on mine are going down very well. So no need to worry, just take your time! I've been decalling for a couple of weeks doing one a day or so (as to not disturb other newly laid decals) and thusfar very little issues.

Up there for thinking with the sanding dust as a texture for the seat and steering wheel. Looks great.

Awesome texture on the seat! I've been trying different media to get the effect but have not tried woodworking "flour" ... guess I'll sand a board and get some of it !

My 107 was coming along nicely until the front wing. After covering the entire wing with CF decals, I noticed a little blotchiness. After a quick shot of clear, the blotchiness got worse. I think I'm now going to strip it off and start again.

I used F1 Specialties CF decals (have worked fine in the past), over a lightly sanded (Micromesh 4000) unpainted black plastic wing and Tamiya TS13 clear.

Any ideas what went wrong?

I don't know about F1 Specialties, but with SMS C/F you need to paint the part (SMS says semi gloss black) so it can stick to the part better.
I would try painting the wing after you strip it.
