1996, R*thmans Williams Renault FW18 (1:20 Studio 27).

Post by KB78 »

Estoril, 12 February 1996. Williams unveiled the new FW18 to the World’s Press. In March last year I started this Kit, finally finishing two days ago. After some research, I realised that I was less than 48 hours from a historical coincidence, so whilst I most definitely did not originally plan it like this, I thought that it would be nice to wait & post this, 25 years to the day on 12 February 2021.

I’ve added some custom, scratch built, Aluminium front wishbones. Resin copies of FW17’s “O.Z. Racing” Wheel Rims (the ones in the Kit were too small to fit over the Brakes!), MFH Seat Belts & Slick Tyres. Studio 27 Carbon Decal & “Top Studio” Body Fasteners/Bolt Heads. I’m really pleased that I also added the chopped FW13B Radiators, I hadn’t realised just HOW visible they are & how open & empty the Sidepods would have looked without them. The Paint & clear Coat are from the absolutely superb Zero Paints in addition to Halfords Satin Black & Humbrol/Revell Enamels where required.

The last component, the TV Camera hasn’t been finished or fitted yet but FW18 didn’t have a Camera fitted at the launch either, so whilst I have not modelled the launch version (or any particular Race version for that matter) I kind of have an excuse (ish, kinda, sort of).
Whilst I was taking these Photo’s I remembered that my previous FW17 & this FW18 had identical Wheel Rims & Tyres so I had some fun switching between Slicks & Wets. This explains why the Tyres randomly alternate. The intention is to leave it on Slicks.

It’s definitely not the easiest of Kits to build & required lots of modification, corrections, tweaks & scratch building but I thoroughly enjoyed the process. There still 3 small irritations & inaccuracies that caught me out late in the day, trying to correct two of these would have introduced another error in its place so I wouldn’t have gained anything. Whilst the Front Wing Support Pylons are about 2-3mm too far rearward. Whilst these are a little frustrating, I’m really very happy with the outcome especially given that my 25 wait for an accurate, detailed 1/20 Model of my second favourite Car of all time, FW18, is now at an end.
Thanks for looking, hope that you enjoy the Pics.

Thank you, I'm glad that you like it. I was (am) a big fan of Hill an extremely intelligent, quiet, decent

but very witty Guy, almost too grown up to have ever been a Racing Driver!
