Ferraris 1987 & 1988 finished

Post by JM »

After the Ferraris of 1985 and 1986 which I finished lately I continued in chronological sequence and have now build the Ferraris of 1987 and 1988. They are the Fujimi kits of the F187 early version, F187 late version and the F187-88C. It really was a joy to build them. Plastic kits are much easier to build in my mind with much less to adapt and file away for proper fitting etc. And thereby it goes much quicker wirh less cursing :D. It took me only a little more than two weeks to finish all three of them.

The early and late versions of the F187 are completely identical kits except for the decals. One just has to use different turbo air intakes (flat for the early version and "snorkels" for the later one) and fit an antenna at the car's nose for the later version whereas the early version has none. As I did the early version in San Marino spec I left out the lower rear wing element as it was not utilized there.

The F187-88C kit is almost identical with the F187 kits except for the decals, a different rear wing and yet another turbo air intakes (slightly bigger snorkel with a different shape). And aditional to the antenna which has to be placed at another place on the car's nose there is a pitot tube. And there is a pop-off valve on top of the engine which protrudes the cowling

I build the kits OOB with the following additions. Fabric seatbelts and carbon decals for the wings, chassis inside and undertray and some aftermarket decals for the tobaccos. And I added the headrests which were not included in the kits. To achieve the velvet like finish of the seats and the headrests I used baking powder and sprayed it with the appropriate matt finish afterwards.

The early 1987 version is Michele Alboreto's car from the San Marino Grand Prix where he finished third:

The late season kit depicts Gerhard Berger's Japanese Grand Prix winning car:

And finally the F187-88C which is the 1988 Italian Grand Prix winner of Gerhard Berger:

Here you can see the different turbo air intakes. From left to right F187 early, F187 late, F187-88C:

Here are the different antenna and pitot tube arrangements. From left to right F187 early (no antenna), F187 late (antenna in the middle), F187-88C (antenna on the right side, pitot tube in the middle):

And here are all three Ferraris of 1987 and 1988 together:

Fabulous! This is the time period when I was introduced to F-1. Pulse still quickens looking at these cars. Excellent job.

Nicely done. I particularly like the way you finished off the wings with CF decals and the use of baking powder.

Fantastic builds. I really like the comparison of the 3 versions.

My personal preference goes to the last Turbo Ferrari :)

What a handsome threesome! All the CF work looks great, and yes, as San Marino said, the baking powder trick for the seat leather came out really nice. Nice representations of the cars that fought hard against McLaren's dominance in those years.

Thanks for sharing!
Cheers, Chris
