STP Turbine '68 Indy 500 Double Build

Post by whatisdeletrazdoing »

Hello everyone,
Finally finished a project that's been off and on for months.
It's a pair of AMT Lotus 56 Turbine kits. I'll admit that the kits were better than I expected. A lot of flash that needed cleaning up, both for the most part the fit was good. I decided to build the two front-row cars - Graham Hill's #70, and Joe Leonard's #60. Leonard's car was build box stock. Hill's was built with a whole bunch of added details. I also made the pit sign that Andy Granatelli showed Joe Leonard on his last pit stop.

Image
I used Mr. Color Lacquer Bright Red thinned with self-leveling thinner for that incredible STP orange. A very nice paint but it's so bright that it's difficult to tell if I've covered everything. The yellow for Leonard's car was Testors Pactra Fluorescent Yellow per recommendation from Michael at IndyCals. Not an easy paint to work with, but it's exactly the right color. I used IndyCals decals and they were perfect.

Both cars side-by-side. Here you can see the extra detail added to the #70 car. Details included wiring and plumbing, the back of the instrument panel, separate master cylinders, thin metal exhaust fins, Eduard photoetch seatbelts, and resin tires from IndyCals.

Here you can see the added wiring, instrument backs, instrument panel brace, and master cylinders.

A few shots of Hill's car. One detail was replacing the stalk-mounted kit mirrors with the Tyrrell 003-style mirror mounts that Hill ran. Ultimately, Leonard's mirrors being like the kit ones and Hill's being like this is what made me choose which car to detail and which one to leave stock.

Thanks everyone for looking!

Very Nice! Now you have me interested in that kit and car, as well as the Mr. Color Bright Red.

Thanks for the great photos.
