MP4/2B vs. MP4/2C

Post by SBEST »

Does, anyone know how much of a difference there is between the MP4/2B & MP4/2C?

I am interested in getting the Italeri MP4/2 and doing Lauda's car from 1985.

Kind Regards,

Steve

Basically it's just minor aerodynamic changes (side pod area, naca duct on nose, cockpit area, ...). The tank was made smaller in accordance with the regulations.
A new six-speed gearbox and a revised version of Bosch’s superb Motronic engine management system (invisible).

Thanks. I see the NACA duct. Also, different decals.

A quick check from my memory, these are the obvious differences between 2B & 2C from outside.
McLaren MP4-2B-C.jpg
Air intake is at location 2 on 2C but location 1 on 2B
The windscreen and mirror (3) location are different.
There is no extension (4) for air outlet for side pod on 2B.

As for engine, the mark difference is the 2B engine does not have the spark wire cover.

You will need to find photos of the 2 cars and compare to find all the visible differences.

Well, I am interested in purchasing upgrades that are done by cottage builders. This would be Top Studio, RB, and Shapeway stores.

Hardest thing is the windshield area. I planned to make a vac formed replacement, but never did.
Then yes, the square intake at the back of the sidepod. Rear suspension also changes a bit, though it's similar to late 85... like dutch GP ;-)
Then there's the own Protar unaccuracy: Sidepod front section should be some 3mm higher just at the radiator exit. I've seen reports of sidpods being slightly shorter (both at front and rear) but honestly I never found a graphic evidence. I suppose those lucky guys having received both 1/20 cars can compare and tell you.
I have more than one, so one will probably be a 1985 unit...

Yes, and Paul´s awesome work indeed includes a nice windshield... forgot to mention!
I suggest to merge both threads.
