Paint cracking
Hello! I painted this MP4/9 sometime this last summer then boxed it after a few weeks. I dug it out of the boxed pile and find that the TS36 is all cracked. Anyone know why this happened? The TS26 had no such problems. Rather disappointed to have to repaint this one and I'd really rather not have it happen again, any advice would be appreciated.

Re: Paint cracking
Well! I think I answered my own question. I took a look at all my Macs and they all have varying degrees of cracked TS36. I think i'm done with TS36. Thanks, everyone!

Re: Paint cracking
maybe it's not TS36 on itself, but the combination with what lies beneath. Usually it's thinners that don't get along...

Re: Paint cracking
TS36 over TS26 over Tamiya surface primer.

Re: Paint cracking
I would say the paint below wasn't fully dried, gased out and destroyed the orange... Also the orange looks very heavy and maybe attacked the white ?!

Re: Paint cracking
I have exactly the same issue with my 1/12 MP4/6.
Used tamiya primer, TS26, TS36 and TS13 Clear Gloss.
Made the model 3 years ago, and the TS36 cracks a little. My 1/20 models are still in good shape though..

Re: Paint cracking
Guys, is this the CLEAR that is cracking, or the paint beneath?
What happens if you sand it down - the clear that is, with 4000 to 12000?

Re: Paint cracking
I first discovered this issue the TS 13 when I built a the toyota T-020 for the advertisement. I was under a very tight time constraint and didn't have time to let it cure properly. Shortly after delivery, the front end cracked so bad they could only use the backside for the ad.
The issue is that all paints shrink as they cure and that is what is happening here. Even paints from the same company cure at slightly different rates. In this case the top coat is shrinking faster. Don't be fooled by the fast flash time of Tamiya's lacquers. Just because you can handle it doesn't mean it is fully cured especially if you put thick wet coats down.
Recommendation: spray on multiple very thin coat with time between to allow them to cure. Paint that is twice as thick takes four times as long to cure, so take your time and let them cure before adding clear over the top. Another option is to use a food dehydrator to speed the curing. I've found that overnight in my dehydrator works between coats works perfectly for me.

Re: Paint cracking
Petej, would you consider 20 minutes enough time for a single THIN coat to cure? I have usually left only 5 minutes max between coats with Testors, sometimes less. I leave the thick coat for last, and at that, it is just wet to the eye, not sopping wet. If that makes sense.
