Tamiya 1:12 Williams FW14B +Top-Studio

Post by Seema »

Hello model building friends!
I have owned this model since it came out in 1992. I wasn't ready to start it as my skills weren't good enough. This gave me the opportunity to collect all the beautiful accessories from different manufacturers, such as ThundervalleyF1, RB-MOTION, AZRM and most recently Top-Studio. For the color, I chose the Zero-Paint set and the Shunko decals. Primer comes from Tamiya. I use the 40ml glasses to mix myself. Is painted with an H & S Infinity and a 0.4 & 0.6mm nozzle. After almost two months I'm almost done with the monocoque. Some changes have been made to the side of the tank and the front cockpit cover to come closer to the original. I was inspired by F1Modlz (Paul de Wilde) who has created an excellent construction report on his site. He is also the person who has over 600 reference photos of the Williams FW14B for sale. The best you can get for reverence. So enough written, this is the status of my model. In the coming days I will show more pictures of the building process. Hope the quality of the pictures are ok.
I'm not looking for Studio-27 decals. Namely ST-27 FP0002/FP0003/FP0004. If anyone has any to give I would be very grateful.

Excellent detail work; looking forward to the next photo set you post. I'm too old to do this type of model detailing anymore, I'll just sit on the sidelines and observe.

Noice!
This is the first model I have seen where an attempt has been made to correct the top cover. Good work!
Can you expain a bit more about what you have done to the 'side of the tank'?

I'm glad that you like my work.
As can be seen in the two pictures, I cut off the rounded rear part of the side tank and filled it with plastic card. On the third picture I marked what should be cut out. Attention the order of the pictures starts from the bottom. That was the simplest thing that had to be changed. The side line on the cover, where the hydraulics for the front dampers are housed, was a major rebuild. The part marked in black had to be removed from the lower lid and added to the upper lid. So that a straight line is created instead of the edge. When you visit the F1 Modlz website https://f1modlz.com/fw14b-rebuild-1-12/ go, they see an excellent diary.

Thanks for the explanation!
I spoke to Paul at F1Modlz several times last year about modifying the top cover.

Have you made or are you going to make any more corrections?
GT-F2 made a list on F1M in Sept 2013 of the problems he found with the Tamiya kit.
This was his summary:-
1. The front wing main plane is too thick.
2. The cover over the front dampers is incorrectly shaped behind the 'bullhorns', it has a step on the kit which doesn't exist on the real car.
3. The active suspension dampers are way too slim.
4. The side profile of the rollover hoop is incorrect.
5. The base of the refuelling port on the rear monocoque bulkhead should be surrounded by a recess, not surface mounted.
6. The radiator ducts are incorrectly shaped and the opening on the side pod is too wide.
7. The protruding portion of the fuel tanks that the radiator ducts wrap around at the rear of the monocoque is too low (far too much clearance left by TAMIYA for the bodywork to sit over it).
8. The engine is an RS3/RS4 hybrid, if building an RS4 variant, the hydraulic pump should not be mounted on the end of the camshaft, it was relocated. The injectors should also be positioned above intake trumpets on the RS4 version.
9. The radiator air outlet on the rear part of the side pod is incorrectly shaped at the top.

Hello Malc.
I have already searched for this page GT-F2 in vain. The Tamiya kit has some flaws but I won't be able to correct all of them. The refueling system is included in the Top-Studio set5 and has been modified. In this model I will use the early RS3C engine. A complete FW14B and the RS4 motor and some top studio sets are available for a later model. But that's another matter. The shape of the cooling channels was not changed, I only removed the mounting brackets for the ECU on the side and filled the holes. In the course of construction there will certainly be some small changes. What that will be remains to be seen. Oh yes, the diffuser was left as it comes from the kit. Maybe I'll get around to posting some pics today.
greetings Martin

Thanks for the list from G Malc, this is what i was searching for also. :)
The diffusor is not listed but as Martin said, for some races it has to be modified.
It`s realy a long list and some changes are very hard to be done, especially when it comes to the bodywork, could be a "years project" finaly!
Yes please keep on posting pictures Martin! :)

Amazing work, gives me something to aspire to. Thanks for posting these pics. It'll help when I get to the other Top Studio kits I have.
