Despite the serious attempts from some members on this forum to kill my project by providing pictures that show that I'm doing it wrong, I haven't given up. :D
As I added plastic to the inside of the engine cowl I had enough material to sand it down. The large bulge has been removed so the cowl's shape follow the rest of the body.
As suspected the engine doesn't fit inside the cowl any more so the smaller bulges visible on pictures must be added. I probably have to alter some of the exhaust pipes as well.
I also made a cut to be able to lower the cowl at the rear getting a slight slope to it. Now I must cut the hole mentioned earlier so the exhaust pipes will fit.
I still wonder if this conversion was a good idea.

I am looking at pictures showing the exhaust system at Holland 1962 and I'm totally confused. Depending of the angle the picture is taken it looks different.
Perhaps I should only replace the pipe at the rear of the kits engine as that one probably is the only pipe that will be seen when the car is finished.
But still, it will irritate me knowing that it is most certainly wrong. I am struggling trying to convince me not to rebuild the radiator as it also will be hidden inside the body.,

You can use the lower part from the kit, it should fit. You would have to look at the upper part, but I think the 1 tube should also fit. The steeper and higher pipe would certainly have to be built new, because the course in the kit is simply flatter!

I had big problems to see were one pipe starts and where it ends. I have now compared the Tamiya kit with pictures an have come to the same conclusion as you.
I have bought 1,5 mm aluminium thread and it seems to be soft enough for this purpose. Now I need to figure out how high it should be. So now I have to make the engine cowl fit above the engine again.

Now it beginning to be a little tricky. Were shall the new smaller bulge for the valve covers be? I did some measuring and cut a hole, hopefully in the right position but the cowl didn't fit. I had to sand off some material inside the cowl to make it thinner so that the valve covers have some space at the top. I have temporary glued the engine in place so I can fig everything out. The glue have to set before I can continue. I have been thinking on how to make the new bulges. I have been thinking of making new out of Miliput or Magic Sculp, but got an idea. I will search my spare parts looking for some 1/144 scale drop tanks. With some luck I can find something useful.

I didn't find any drop tanks but instead something that perhaps is even better. Nose bulges from an SAAB recce Lansen.
But I still can't get the engine cowl in place. It hits the top of the valve covers. I can't grind off any more material on the inside as the cowl is getting to thin.
I think that I made it to narrow at the back so I need to add some material to it.

I have been working on the engine cover and thought that I was getting there but thanks to member's on this forum I have better pictures of the car showing that It shouldn't slope like I have built it.

No use sulking. Just go on with it. I raised it and have started to reshape it.

But I really need to get some paint on it to see how it is coming. The "camouflage pattern" makes it hard too see the shape.

But it really doesn't look bad!! :D
Are your bulges big enough to close the valve cover openings again?

The bulges are to small to cover the holes, but that is because the holes are to big. It was hard to find the positions for them.
I don't think that it will be a big trouble to fix though.
