That looks very nice!
A silly question, but how did you align the masking to the decals?
Is there a trick to it, or did you go by eye and then aligned the decals to the painted borders?
Hi, and definitely! Not a silly question at all, I'm more than happy to answer. Time, patience & unhealthy obsession are the main tricks! Overall I "think" it took me
about 10-12 hours, over two days to mask it correctly.
To start, I cut the individual Decals/Logo's from the Sheet. Then, one at a time, place them in position on the body work using Blutack (dry, backing Paper still on) & try to
mask the colour demarcations around them accordingly using 0.5mm masking Tape. I then remove the Logo's.
After which there's a massive amount of time spent viewing every line/mask from every angle, tweaking & adjustment to ensure symmetry & parallelism. "If" I get it right
the Paint demarcation should follow the correct contours & finally be hidden perfectly by the Pinstripes.
To try & get the Pinstripes straight, even & avoid unwanted waves or fluctuations, I tend to use lots & lots of Water & very gently pull the Decal from one end
across the Body so that the Decal self straightens.
I think this is what you're asking?? If not, let me know & I'll try & come up with a better answer
Thank you! That was precisly it!
Seeing as your process has worked wonders, I will try the same when I get to my Williams
Currently building:
Alfa Romeo 159 (since 2021) Recently finished:
Renault R30 (since 2010)
Thank you! That was precisly it!

Great, I'm so pleased that I was able to help! I absolutely love this livery but in modelling terms it's a massive Pain to Mask & quite tricky to get right.
I wish you all the very best with your build, what Williams are you going to build?

Just the Fujimi FW14B and Tamia FW11B straight out of the box..
Nothing as advanced as your amazing project!
Thank you, I appreciate that! I painted the Fujimi FW14B Bodywork a while ago using the same technique & I was pleased with the way it came out. It was actually a little easier than this project because the Decals & Bodywork were made for one another & the pre-printed Masks were really good. Please feel free to post your project, can never have too many Williams here! .
To answer your question I used "Rattle Can" Halfords Automotive Primer followed by Zero Paints (Airbrushed) Brilliant White, FW14B yelllow & Rothmans Blue. I use Rothmans Blue on all of my Williams in spite of it "technically" being the wrong shade. Zero's FW14B Blue is absolutely correct & matches the real thing brilliantly but, to my Eyes it just doesn't "look" right on a Model. Whereas Rothmans Blue really does (just my opinion). The Lacquer is also pre mixed, pre thinned Zero Paints Clear.
I'll almost certainly use some Humbrol Tins at some point later on for the smaller areas. For Darker components like the Floor, Seat & Gearbox I'll use some Halfords Rattle Can Satin Black overlaid with Carbon Fibre Decal as I find the Decal adheres really well to this texture. Hope that this helps
I've found the Resin body proportions a little "off" so I've had to make a few compromises on the Decal placement, mainly the "Labatts" Logo's on the sidepod leading edge, The options were extremely limited so I've had to try & replicate the overall "look" rather than precise placement. It's frustrating to have to settle for this but it was the only real solution. Other than this, It's come out quite well.
