Malc, good observation on the inner fairing or "end plate" on the front wing! I like that there are so many people with good eyes for detail on this forum!

And thanks for the response on the pictures, it must be that I have my computer set on "old man with bad eyes" setting...I have to change that back now. Be young again.

Also, this model is indeed the 1971 SA car that I am intending to represent. I realize there are some issues with the kit versus the car in the race - and apparently the RACE WEEKEND. What I mean is that I have seen photos that appear to be in practice or Q that have a more representative nose to the Tamiya kit, and include the words SHELL on the leading edge. This is not seen in the race. Alternatively, the race nose appears to be more open than the kit, although not as attractive in my eyes. Another thing I just see now is the lettering "ANDRETTI" is askew on the right side of the car. I just applied that decal last night, and I put it on straight....sigh!

Here is the car I am representing (note: NOT duplicating) and my build is really to resurrect the one that I started and built as a kid. I am not going into much detail on this car, however some things are important and I will address them along the way. If I went all in on this model it would take me too long and I would be frustrated that I can't put it in my collection case and move on to other projects. It will look cool when done, and Malc, I appreciate your inputs - keep em coming and encourage me to notice and perhaps do the right thing!

Here is the car I am trying to represent:

Hi Steve,
OK got it! Yes, slicks were not introduced until the 2nd GP at Spain.
Good call on the Shell sticker, I had not noticed that before. Comparing the practice and race pics the race nose is shorter, so bigger opening for the high ambient and no room for the Shell sticker.
I have one of these half finished so will follow with interest. I got stuck on the cockpit surround as it will not fit the tub. There is some reason I did not want to simply glue it on, but can't remember why now.......

Can you explain how you uploaded these pics? They look much bigger than most of the pics actually around, how did you get managed to post them that large?? Tried it for a couple of times now, but no succes and me and many more followers like the big pics!
I really just cut and paste these from Postimage. When I saw how they were composed on the COMPUTER, I wanted to find out how to DOWNSIZE them! The right portion of the images are cut off on the landscape ones on my computer, but appear ok on my iPhone. So I wanted to get them to at least include all of the intended image. Having said that, I may have my screen res set a bit different for 120% text and that indeed does skew my view.

What are you guys seeing? For example the car in the box should show the whole car. I only see 70% of the actual image.

I will be uploading another installment maybe today or tomorrow as a lot of work got done over the weekend.

Thank you for the encouragement and looking in! As usual my research is a lot of fun and am learning about this car and the 1971 races as well!
I can see the complete car in the box, nothing missing. Very courious that you did it with copy and paste, i usually do it the same way, but all pics i`m posting since the Forum has changed, appear in a blue outlined box on which you have to click to see the full resolution. But even with clicking on them i wonder if this is the resolution i choosed. I´m using Flickr which worked fine since the changes in the forum have been done, i like to see pics in full size instead of clicking on every pic. Even that you can switch through the pics after you have opened the first makes no sence to me, the description or better the explanation written to the pics are not visible that way, so super boring to read the text and open every single pic afterwards!
I realy hope that E will change that function back again, the way i can read your thread incl pics is what i like, keep on going! :)
Take a stand!

Just to interrupt this rehab for a public service announcement on large scale photos.

Here is a screen grab of postimage. I use the second one from the top, titled - "Direct Link", cut and paste that between the brackets thingies and let er rip. [img]https://i.postimg.cc/Bvg0vz8V/screen-grab-how-to.jpg

LOL, now i just get a small icon....what the heck.....no photo.

So lets try just [....img] instead of the whole word which is included in the "image" button above on the full editor of this thread.

Image

So that gets us the blue box around a small image - in my case, a terrible resolution unless you click on it.

So to answer the question, it appears that you have to use the "image" button above, which gives the larger intended photos. But THAT ISNT WORKING any longer for some reason....

Also, I reset my screen size for 100% not 125% and now I too can see the original full images that I posted.

Now back to your regularly scheduled programming.

Wow, look at that! I DID NOT use the image button, but typed in my own brackets image brackets and paste the image source manually.

So the windshield, which after thoroughly exhaustive and time consuming research (fully enjoyable I must add) was polished because it had old glue on the edges. I could NOT remove all the glue, but is much nicer than before.

The interesting part of this is that the windshield is NOT the design used on Mario's winning car from South Africa. Needless to say, I am using this kit part, and I won't tell anybody about it.
I got stuck on the cockpit surround as it will not fit the tub. There is some reason I did not want to simply glue it on, but can't remember why now.......
Chinamalc, no worries on that cockpit surround. Take a close look at the surround on the real RACE car. It has duct tape on the leading edge holding it on. Use micro magnets to hold the back part down. :)

The original front upper control arms were rough. The left side one was cracked in half right here, so I used the nice tiny drill set and a pin vise to set some holes and insert a small brass rod.

Cool thing is when these spent time in the oven cleaner, you could see the pin through the plastic, like an x ray of some surgery! Also had to repair one of the attachment pivots
https://i.postimg.cc/LshcHspn/IMG-E4152-2.jpg

Originally I only cleared over the white plastic and you can see 45 years of yellowing Testors at work.
https://i.postimg.cc/DZdQ56Wh/IMG-4066.jpg

Exploded view of some of the sum of the parts. I have already repaired the oil cooler attachment tubes in the rear of the car, those were in multiple pieces. Sanded and sprayed the oil tanks with the last can of Testors modelmaster Aluminum Buffing left in the world….and mistakenly painted the rear bulkhead the same. It has since been painted correctly, in black.
https://i.postimg.cc/wxwLv7Lw/IMG-4145.jpg

The right side upper radius rod was melted so I used a scrap sprue and pinned it to the original. Added some plastic tube to the end and worked it.

Some more detailing was all done in plastic, so I primed, painted alclad black, and then alclad chrome on the suspension pieces. I missed one part on this set with the alclad chrome, so I used Rustoleum metallic on one part. See if you can tell what it is. Fortunately it is not a “paired” component, however I plan to use the Rustoleum in the future, considering it was $3.50 for the huge can. I may just paint a chrome funny car or something just for fun – as I want to build one of my John Force kits someday.

So I also got to painting the body. I am keeping it simple, and not filling the horizontal line between the upper and lower tub. I used Testors Modelmaster Italian Red. Heated it up and it sprayed flawlessly! The main tub received NO PRIMER and ONE COAT of red to preserve the rivets.

Back at it again. Have been getting a lot completed so let’s start off with a few images to grab your attention.

I keep all of my instruction sheets since I was a little boy. Crazy idea I know, but look at what was in back then….

https://i.postimg.cc/59qxn6yW/IMG_4331.jpg

I detailed the “Mario Andretti” a bit with some paint and chalk for depth. Sanded the helmet mold lines off and awaiting the visor.

https://i.postimg.cc/MHxzz8sL/IMG_4252.jpg
https://i.postimg.cc/Pxw0wFNH/IMG-4254.jpg

The paint turned out pretty well. Yes, I realize the molding seam that was completely forgotten about. I am gonna pretend I didn't see that.

https://i.postimg.cc/0jfPQHFy/IMG_4234.jpg

So then I polished it out with Novus 1 ONLY.

https://i.postimg.cc/VkHsnp6S/IMG_4417.jpg

Then assembled the upper and lower chassis parts with Mario in the middle. I did not want to use CA as I was afraid of crazing, so used thin Tamiya cement instead, requiring a bit of a girdle to hold in place. I have some issues to deal with later....where the thin Tamiya glue crazed the painted lower of the car....

https://i.postimg.cc/k4m0bvx6/IMG-4367.jpg

I wanted to check out the decal package, so spent an evening cutting them out. Unfortunately the Champion decal is too big, so I need to create a smaller one or find one in the scrap box.

https://i.postimg.cc/dtxgBY2K/IMG-4368.jpg

I hand painted the aluminum that is barely seen under the bulkhead and the front cover, then assembled the front upper suspension. The front vertical bulkhead really had to be carved and manipulated into place, and as is, didn’t completely hold the upper rockers in place perfectly.

https://i.postimg.cc/d0ksB6k5/IMG_4405.jpg

Here it is with more parts on….unfortunately all this cool stuff gets hidden by the body panel

https://i.postimg.cc/ZR6TkqL3/IMG_4418.jpg

Those little plastic lollipops that snap into the suspension parts as joints, well, they were broken, so I glued some nuts in place to accept machine screws. Not a big deal to some, but I always use metric, same for real cars, because I am capable of counting to 10 and going from there. Covid has supply issues here at my local hobby shop and I had to settle for something called oh oh dash ninety. Whatever that means.

https://i.postimg.cc/2S3rkGwC/IMG_4429.jpg

I then painted the brake calipers by hand with Metalmaster Magnesium. It will be good enough for this restoration. Rotors are OEM Tamiya chrome plating and Steel Testors on the hat surface.

https://i.postimg.cc/9MHhBhjf/IMG_4445.jpg

I then installed them on the car to see how this is gonna work….a little fitment and alignment issues at first but nothing that a little tweaking can’t fix. I will have to create the tie rod ends and toe link for one side as I must have lost one through the years….

https://i.postimg.cc/TYtTvFnk/IMG_4446.jpg
https://i.postimg.cc/1t0ZCj9r/IMG_4427.jpg

Next up is the engine….which I am disassembling tonight.

Awesome stuff! Keep going, it will look great when it's done.

Here is the entire 1971 Italian GP at Monza; perhaps you will enjoy watching some of it.
