1/24 Jordan 191 - Hasegawa conversion

Post by DasWiesel »

Happy New Year to everone! :D

New year - new projekt! Right before Christmas, I picked up 3 F1 kits at my local customs. They were laying at HLJ´s warehouse for quite a while so it was about time too let them be shipped.

Like so many, I guess, the Jordan 191 has always been one of my very favourites. The car designed by Gary Anderson was competitive right from the start and its shape was, is and will be always beautiful!
No problem, you might say, Tamiya made a marvelous kit - just build your desired F1!
Well, I´m one of those strange people who think, 1/20 is just the wrong scale! :D I strictly stick to 1/24, because I like to see cars of completely different types standing in my showcases.

I was so very happe about Hasegawa´s recent decision to reissue their lovely F1 kits and bought both versions of their Jordan 192 kits.
In the pictures, the green one is from their "Shakedown-Version" which I will convert to 191 and the blue one is the "normal" 192 version for comparison.
Nevertheless I´ve bought Tamiyas 191 a long time ago, because I was dreaming of this already long ago. :)
I will take this kit as a reference to scale down the measurements.

I´ve just created a flickr account for this, please let me know, when the pictures are not visible.
I also apologise for the rather low quality, but I was just so keen on starting this during those few days of free time around Christmas, that I didn´t want to waste time with some elaborate photo setup. I simply took my phone to spend as much time on building, as possible.

Lets start!
First step is rather simple. The 191 has a bigger cockpit opening - mark and cut!

Next step was to change the sides of the monocoque. At the 191 they become narrower to the back. I made a cut, bend them to shape and filled the gap with super glue and micro-ballons.

Image

The sidepods are lower at the 191, so I decided to cut them out, fill in a small stripe of 3mm above and glued them back in place.

The whole nose section of the 191 is sitting lower. This was probably the most difficult part to cut and glue, so far.

Image

Image

The cockpit opening is more or less at the same height, only the nose in front of it is much steeper. After a few cuts, filling and a lot of sanding I was pretty satisfied.

Image

The Nose of the 191 is also a bit longer, so I glued in about 4.5mm of sheet.

Image

Had to fill up the nose with resin for sanding.

Image

I think, it doesn´t look to bad compared to Tamiyas Monocoque. 8)

Very cool conversion!! I build mostly 1:20 and for that 1:24 is for me a sort of no go area.. although i have a few kits on my stash.
I did it the other way around, used hasegawa's 192 as reference to convert the tamiya 191 into the 192.

Looking forward for more pictures of your build.
Have fun!

Didn't Tamiya make a smaller scale version of the 191? Is 1/28 too small?

They sure did. It was in the motorised Mini F1 series. There was also the Ferrari 642, Footwork FA13, Lotus 102B, Tyrrell 020 and Williams FW14. Built without the track guides etc they built up to a nice replica. 1 piece body. Down side was peel and stick markings. I built the Jordan 26 years ago - its in a box somewhere

DasWiesel,
Thats a fair effort so far! It always amazes me the lengths guys go to in building their favourite subjects.
Keep on going. :D
Cheers Tim

Thanks a lot guys!

@Hein
I will have a look at your conversion for sure! Maybe there´s something useful for me to learn.

@bossy + Tim
I know about those Tamiya toy kits, but they are hard to find, expensive to get and might be to small.

Right now I´m trying to finish an E36 racing car and will get back to this one soon.

I also have been trying to convert the Hasegawa 192 to a curb side 191.

I have scaled both the Tamiya 191 drawing and Hasegawa 192 drawing to 1/24. Here's an overlap of both cars. The black line one is 191 and red line is 192. If you print this picture on 8.5" x 11" paper with 0.5 marginal all around, it will be 1/24.

I also have the separate drawings for 191 and 192. Hope the drawing helps.
