WIP - 1/20 Tyrrell 020C

Post by Badi »

Hello,

Let me share this WIP

This is the car that I want to build, not sure about the right verion, but it seems will be close to the Monaco GP.

I will do De Cesaris version, because I dont have any car he drove, so the Head Chest of De Cesaris is a little different basically.

The rest it is pretty much the same from Katayama's car.

I will use, of course, Tamiya Tyrrell 020B for this convertion and decals from S27.

Image

I need to change the rear of the car and front wings....so I just cut the rear and did some job painting previously to determine the best position for the big white decal, I am not comfortable to do this mask without a good reference where to place it.

So, I did these 2 pieces on 3D printer.

This is the first impression after everything are in the place.

I think it is ok when comparing to the pictures

I will move on soon.

Hi Badi,
that's a very promising start, you have done here!

I have the AMC transkit. If you need informations how their parts are made, let me know.

So lets move on. I had a problem with decals, they were old and the big white decal doesnt cover the blue and red area in a good way and also decal was damaged when I tried to place it on the right position, so, ok, lets mask.

First thing was to mask the border between white and red and a little white stripe that goes over the red.

Image

The second part I masked was the lower part of the car and the front wings and also for protection of engine cover.

Later I did the same for the red top of the car, because I will paint first the color blue.

Image

Painted! TS-15 Definately the right color for Tyrrells!

Removing the mask and checking first result

Image

It is ok at first impression, I see some parts that will need to be fixed, but it is ok for the moment.I go to paint the gold leaf to do the gold stripe over the red color. I will also do the same for the front wings in case I need to do the gold stripes on the front wings, I will check decals to see if it is necessary to replace them by paint too.

Image

I dont have pictures but the front wings were made using a 3D printing. it is not 100% accurated but it is nice to my eyes. I dont need perfection or too much detailing.

Image

Now I am removing the mask stripe that will be filled with red color and adding an extra stripe to do the gold leaf bigger stripe.

Image

This is more than a double size stripe. I used 0.4mm stripe tape in all cases, but here it is about 2.5 bigger.

Image

So red is applied. Italian Red to match de red of decals.

Image

Some tension in the air. It is ok, some easy corrections will work out over the model.

Image

Image

I prepared part of chassis and rear wing. It will be curbside model, no details under cover.
I worked on sanding and fixing painting as much as I could. I checked rest of decals and all seemed ok, no need more masks and front wings were painted by red too.

Ready for decals!

I just forgot to mention that this kit was old and when I acquired the kit, it was already started and some parts were glued. I was not able to disassemble it properly. This is the reason for curbside and you see some parts are already done before the painting job.

For masking and painting it is of course not exactly a simple paint job. :o
I hope you get the few failures fixed. Otherwise it doesn't look bad. :D
