Leyton House CG 901B
I started working on this old Tamiya kit recently. I've seen a few builds online and in magazines, but thought I'd show my attempt with a few observations along the way.

Re: Leyton House CG 901B
I picked up the kit at a nearby model show last year (Heritagecon in Hamilton, Ontario - great show!) for a good price. It had already been started, but it was easy to disassemble the work that had been done. I started with the engine and gearbox assembly, masking and painting with Alclad aluminum, magnesium and pale gold, and Zero semi-gloss black. The masking was a pain in the butt, but turned out OK. I then realized that the way the rear suspension parts mounted, there were ugly seams on the top and bottom of the gearbox. I decided to cut off the suspension arms and try to fill in the seams. I drilled holes in the ends of the arms and added pegs to the mounts to help locate them and make the joints sturdier. I also used some thin styrene sheet to reduce the size of the holes in the back of the engine block where the shock assemblies would mount. In retrospect, this all would have been a lot easier had I thought of the modifications before masking and painting

I did a lot of clean-up work on the exhaust headers, which had a lot of flash. I drilled the ends and added pegs to locate all of the pipes to the engine, and drilled the engine block to match.

I also started filling in ejection pin marks and sink marks in the floor pan.

Re: Leyton House CG 901B
I managed to find a Studio 27 Carbon Fiber decal set for this kit, so I started on some of the decal work. Having had issues with S27 decals in the past, I finally developed an approach that seems to be working pretty well. I use hot water to soak the decal, apply it to the part, cover it with Solvaset and keep it wet for a few minutes. Then I remove the Solvaset with a cotton bud and heat the decal with a hair dryer for a minute or two. I then apply more Solvaset and work the decal with a soft brush or cotton bud to press it into place. After removing the Solvaset again, I hit it with the hair dryer again and let it sit for a while. This seems to be working pretty well; the decals are pretty tough, and soften up with the Solvaset. The usual Microscale red softer solution doesn't appear to do much of anything. Anyway, here are the results of my first three attempts - a tank that mounts on the engine/gearbox, the air inlet box, and the intake/injector tray. I used Molotow chrome, applied with a brush, for the intake trumpets and all parts were primed and painted with Zero semi-gloss black first. Oh, and masking and painting the cap on the tank was fun.

Finished filling, sanding, masking and painting the gearbox suspension mount areas. I trial-fitted the upper suspension piece and it looks pretty good. I also added some Tamiya black panel line wash to the gearbox.

Re: Leyton House CG 901B
I applied more S27 CF decals to the rear uprights, and started painting the rear shocks and springs.

Re: Leyton House CG 901B
Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't this the only 1/20th scale F1 kit that Tamiya hasn't reissued? I wonder why. Licensing issues? Lack of demand? Leyton House's business failure? Anyway- glad to see a fresh build of this kit. I have two unbuilt, one with a S27 decal set. I
