Stunning colours but what strikes me the most is the perfect shiny surface after clear coat. What clear did you use? Can't wait to see it finished!

Yesterday i worked on the rims, used my home made cuting template to make tape masks to cover the yellow area before spraying the rims black with tamiya satin black.
To be continued :)

...btw need some advice for the GY decals on the rubber of the tyres. This kit has te 'normal' decals, not tamiya style mirrored sticky ones.
What is the best way to approach this? Read some things about gloss clear first, but wich one will stick without trouble on the rubber?
I always f.ck up these tyre decals becouse of de-bonding, big time silvering etc..
Thanks in advance.

There is, or better there are softeners around which should solve your problem, they are very strong and soften the decal so much, that it becomes close to liquid once applied, after drying up they stick very well and silvering is no problem. They are made especially for tyres. The only thing is you have to be carefull, very carefull cause when you have have touched the decal with softener you can`t touch it anymore, otherwise you will mess it up completly.
Take a stand!

I missed looking at every post and miss all the progress.
But I made up for it, read diligently and studied the pictures and I'm thrilled. It turned out great. :o

Interesting circle cutter in any case and the best thing is it apparently works very well - a very clean cutting result.

The clear coat looks great, I also like to use the ZeroPaints.

I can confirm the fact with the Softner, if you work on the decals long enough with it, they stick damn well and you don't have any more problems with peeling or silvering. And as Guido already wrote, be careful after application, they then tear or crease very quickly and you then simply destroy them irretrievably.
Greetings Thomas

Hi Hein,

Great work so far, really enjoying your progress.

The idea of spraying a gloss clear coat on the tyre sidewall is to allow the decal softener something to etch into, and also to allow the adhesive on the decal film to have a better bond.
I would suggest mounting the wheel into the tyre before any spraying is done - this will prevent any cracking of the clear coat / decals when the tyre is stretched over the rim.
Mask off the tread and wheel rim, clean the sidewall of the tyre carefully using a cotton bud dampened with thinners. Let it dry out, then spray a light layer of gloss clear coat. Apply the decal as normal, being sure to use decal softening solutions. When the decal is 100% dry, apply a light coat of matt clear to remove the shine of the gloss coat.

Tamiya's TS13 is the gloss coat I have used, and their TS80 flat clear worked perfectly well - be sure to use very light coats to prevent the clear from attacking the decal.

Cheers, Paul

I am really enjoying this one, thanks for sharing.
No ARISCO on the sidepods? I know it may not match the chosen version but they looks so fine...

Thanks guys!
Worked on the GY decals today and seems to work out pretty good. After cleaning the tyres with IPA alcohol i brushed on thinned vallejo clear gloss on the side walls, and after it dryed the decals had a decent grip on the shiny surface. In a couple of days i will coat the tyre walls with flat.

JamesB , i like the clean less sponsor stickers version a lot more. ;)
