Another Lotus 102

Post by Steffen_T »

Hi all,
after I had seen Wilchan's brilliant conversion of the Lotus 102 earlier this year I also wanted to build a model of this car. I got the required nose cone and the decals from Steffen Huebener and started the project last month. This is the first time I am doing a conversion with a lot of bodywork changes. And even if I have not made a lot on this car, I am satisfied with the progress so far. Here are the first two pictures:

As you can see I try to keep the 102B nose cone in a good shape, so that I can use it as a spare part in my pitlane someday. The extension in front of the cockpit is not finished yet, but the most difficult part is done already.
At this place many thanks to Steffen Huebener for the suply of the most important parts and to Wilchan for his article how to do this conversion!

Hi all,
a lot of time has past since I anounced this project.
My progress is very slowly as there are so many things I have to do aside from modeling.

Here is how the car looked a few weeks ago, when I fitted the front wing:

And here is how the nose currently looks like:
Image

The wing fits perfectly but there are still some minor adjustments to be done on the nose as you can see, but currently I try to reshape the enginecover which turned out to be a really hard task if you want to make it accurate. I suppose that I have already removed 1/3 of the whole enginecover, and there are still more things to be done! 8)

As this is my first major scratchbuild I am always a bit worried that I might come to a point where I have to say that I have messed it up, but until now I am very satisfied with the project and I had a lot of fun while doing it.
I hope the next update comes sooner then this one!

I love the 'warts'n'all' photo's because it shows how messy things can look at the beginning of the process. It's a really gutsy start you've made which I applaud! Great stuff.

Thank you for your comment, SWestern! :)
In the meantime, I have done some more progress with the rearshape of the engine cover.

Appart from a bit more sanding to make the surface even I will now try to make the air intakes on top of the engine cover which you can see on this picture:

Hi Steffen,

Very nice beginning !

Can you tell us more about the picture you showed us, is it a Lotus 102 with the Judd V8 or the crazy Lambo V12 engine ?

Keep us informed about your scratchbuilding, I also have this project in the pile of my workbench, but I still wait for it.

Cheers

Not the right one, but I'm Steffen, too :D
This is a Lotus 102 in 1991 "Lotus 102B" livery. Picture comes from http://www.gurneyflap.com I guess.

The model looks pretty good so far, but I think the rear end of the cowling should be a bit more round. Don't worry, you're much faster with your build than the originator of this theme :-)
Best wishes,
Steffen
