3d printing: Ford Escort MK1 in 1/12 scale

Post by capri-schorsch »

Hi there,
here I would like to document the construction of the Ford Escort MK1 in 1/12.
Since there is no kit in this size, I do the whole thing myself.

Small printing studio is available.

https://abload.de/img/k1024_img_20220102_1190j3o.jpg

It should be this version of the escort.

https://abload.de/img/k1024_preview_origina1jkmt.jpg

At least roughly. I would like to represent the winner of the TW European Championship race Nürburgring 1974.
It was different in the area of the front spoiler.

https://abload.de/img/k1024_meshmixer323jzx.jpg

At first I decided to print the escort with the hoods closed on the front and back.

https://abload.de/img/k1024_img_20211229_16sgjck.jpg

Misprint due to insufficient support in the area.

https://abload.de/img/k1024_img_20211229_16whjrj.jpg

Still unwashed but now better than before.

https://abload.de/img/k1024_img_20211229_16qhj5v.jpg

Fits together quite well without reworking.
Now the wall thickness is not enough for me. 1mm is too thin to have stability and some material to grind.
So I changed the whole thing to a wall thickness of 1.7mm.

Here the excess resin drips off after printing.

https://abload.de/img/k1024_img_20220102_12ypky5.jpg

Done washed and ready to dry overnight on the balcony.

https://abload.de/img/k1024_img_20220102_11qhjxy.jpg

Prototype parts that I probably never need.

https://abload.de/img/k1024_meshmixer2xfkub.jpg

But now I would prefer to present the whole thing openly and have designed the bonnet and trunk lid differently.

https://abload.de/img/k1024_meshmixercbkpq.jpg

Now it's time to design the chassis with the engine compartment and the trunk.
Will be fine!

greetings Christian

Wow, that is a great start.

Tell me, why do you have so many printers? I mean, I don't blame you, i just wonder why you don't just use one? :)

Because i sell my prints and only the K3 needs 8 Nights to print the main parts.
Right now 2 Saturns keep printing the ordered stuff and the third is printing new prototype stuff like the escort is.

The printers are not so expensive like you maybe think.I bought only one as a new one.

Awesome to see this operation!

I see the CAD system in Autodesk Mxxxxxxsoemthing - the images are too small to read.

Do you do the surfacing in Alias and thicken the models yourself? Do you bring in a background image or 2D prints and interpret the drawings to create the surfaces yourself?

It's meshmixer what I mostly use.
But i can't design such files. Got them from different sources and merge and cut what I need in meshmixer.
But without existing files I am helpless.

Very good start on this iconic car Christian, that`s pretty nice and fast progress!
I heard that the support for meshmixer is coming to a close and that many functions will be turned over to Fusion 360, not sure if that is correct, did you heard that also?
Will be following this, the bone is a pretty nice choice you made. :)
Take a stand!

Thanks guys for your comments.

It's a car that run before I was born and I don't remember seeing them driven often on the roads here. But I always loved the look with the big round fenders and the massive tires in it.

@gp-models : sure? Only saw that Netfabb is now included in Fusion 360. But I thought that Meshmixer is already out of support a long time ago. But it's the only tool for a noob like me to get some success.
