1:12 F1 replacement tires and Set up wheels for Tamiya

Post by gp-models »

After a couple of years standing in my junkyard, the tires of my Mclaren MP 4/6 has turned pretty bad, the rubber is no more soft, getting hard and they have flat spots from standing.
As there is no chance to find replacement sets from Tamiya i decided to go for a solution as i have seen it a couple of times here and some are looking for replacement.
With thinking about the idea using 3D printing, the idea grow not only to do a replacement set. So the idea was born to do also rain tires to have the oppertunity to make a choice, even on the wet races.

After some research was done, the Mclaren MP 4/6, the Ferrari 641/2 and the Williams FW 14b came on the list as they all use the same tire dimensions.
Now i can show up the result, slick tires, the early rain tire version and the late ones which appeared first time in Adelaide 1991.
At this point, a big thank you to my buddy Tom, you did an awesome job! :)

The tires fit without any changes on the rims, those kits all have rims casted in one piece, makes it a bit more difficult then the older kits with 2 halfway casted rims.
Printed in very thin layers the result is realy awesome, and there is no support structure on the pattern which leaves a prefect pattern all around.
On the inside flank there is a very light sanding needed, where the support structure was sitting and that`s it. Just painting and applying the decals or even spraying through a stencil.

Enough to the history, here are some pics.

Possible combinations are:
# Slick and early rain tyre for Ferrari 641/2
# Slick, early and late rain tyre for Mclaren MP 4/6
# Slick and late rain tyre for Williams FW 14b

Hi,
Are you planning on selling these tyres and do you think it’s possible to add the text on the inner and outer faces?

Yes i will sell them too if interested.
Which text do you mean? The big Goodyear or the smaller size letters? The problem with the letters is that they will only appear on one side of the tire as on the other side the supports are sitting, that`s why i skipped this idea, otherwise i had to print them different and that ends up in supports on the pattern which i do not prefer.

Thank you Sergey and Christian. :)
I think that some people have the same problem and with the oppertunity to choose between slicks and wet tires, they might be happy like myself :D

I will post a list for the 3 cars which race has wet and dry conditions to make the descision easier.

If you make the sidewalls seperate pieces thus making the completed tire from three parts then you can add the sidewall details without worry of the supports. Ask me how I know this:):):)

This might be a solution Derek, have to check this method and see what`s possible. I only worry about the parting lines and it will extend the printing time (which is realy high caused by the thin layers) enormous, let`s see if it makes sence to do so, but thank you for the idea ;)
