You have built a very beautiful 250F.

I would like to see your other models, especially the Mercedes W196.

Thank you and glad you liked my Maser. The D50, 250F and W196 (in that order) were the 3 cars I liked most when I was a teenager following F1 in the 50's. The Merc not so much but it was driven by my heroes Fangio and Moss! Here's my version of a short wheel-base one. When I was looking for pictures and dimensions it became clear that these cars changed almost race to race ... parts were added or removed and many different exhaust systems were tried and it seems there were 3 different wheel-bases used. In the end I just chose the features that I liked so don't get too upset if it doesn't resemble any W196 you ever saw LOL.

I have also been collecting information on W196. I have the crappy Protar 1/24 W196 that is not close to the real car. Information of these old cars are not easy to come by.

Thanks CK. I don't build kits so I'm not familiar with the Protar. OK, the only other F1 car I have is the Lancia D50 so here's a few shots for you.

Hi CK ... no they're all carved from a composite material called Renshape. I get free offcuts from a factory near me.

Thank you for explaining your process.

Your carving work is outstanding!

I used to have access to small pieces of this engineering foam material when we had a model maker in our company building prototype models for our marketing. It is quite a good material for carving.

The stuff I use is made in Germany I believe and is VERY expensive but fortunately this company gives me as much as I need ... which isn't a lot. You may be familiar with composite "wood" board planks sold for decks and docks at all big box stores. Well, I used a bunch of left overs from a neighbour's deck to make a boat model for a friend and it works every bit as good as Renshape! Better still most manufacturers of the stuff will send you a free sample pack with enough to make several models.
