Re: McLaren MCL35M 2021
This is a really interesting project to follow!
3D modeling is not just a matter of pressing "print" and getting a ready made car in the other end. There are many adjustments, changes and thinking to be done along the way, I can see.
Keep up the good work, it is most interesting!

Re: McLaren MCL35M 2021
It always depends on what you can use as a base or whether you create it all from scratch.BMW wrote: ↑Tue Sep 14, 2021 5:14 am This is a really interesting project to follow!

Since I had a very good base, but also simply wanted to get very close to the original vehicle, some adjustments were necessary. However, it still has to be said that it is only an approximation of the right racing car. And always with the compromise of making it printable.
In addition, you have to say that all adjustments were made on the basis of images and not on the basis of 3D data, so it will never be 100% and you simply cannot keep up with the big model makers - that can't be the goal either.
In the end you always have to find a consensus between hobby and it's still fun to make changes and bring in more details or it's just work and you lose the fun with which you approached the model.
With such a scratch build - whether 3D print or old-school by hand, you will never get exactly everything 100% and that has to be clear from the beginning, otherwise I don't think it makes any sense to start such a project. The focus here was rather on building a model of the current year and completing it before the end of the season.
I'm happy to be able to finish the design and the printing so far and now I'm starting to paint and decal with fun.
Greetings Thomas

Re: McLaren MCL35M 2021
Floor plate finished...
Some small adjustments to do, but most of it is done now.
The badge board elements are the hell... I need hours to bend them into shape while it cured because they kept making waves! Printing them one by one would have been a better option.

Very impressing work on the floor Thomas, the details turned out nice! I only can imagine how much work was needed to do the flaps that fine, i mean how many flaps has this car? A trillion?
Take a stand!

Re: McLaren MCL35M 2021
Hi Thomas,
As about accuracy, nobody is 100% for cars. I remember reading something from Tamiya about F1 models. Even they have license to produce an F1 car, they are not allowed to do any measurement of the car. They have to go in with some know dimension objects to be in the photo so that they can have an idea about the size of the car. All dimensions and shapes are estimates from photos taken with the real car. One advantage that they have is they control how the photos are taken.
Even for road cars, Tamiya always lower the ground clearance to make the car model to have a better scale look.
Scale modelling is still partially an art.
Your work on the MCL35M is fantastic. It is very complicated with the current cars. There are so many fins and winglets and curve surfaces.
One point about your new floor, it seems that the step bottom is missing.

Re: McLaren MCL35M 2021
First Thanks guys.
It is a little hinted at, but not as it should be, as there is a clearly visible edge on the floor.
I'll look at it again and see if it's customizable. Potential for improvement definitely recognized.
Yes, I think you are absolutely right.

Re: McLaren MCL35M 2021
Definitely an inspiring build for someone who has enjoyed making small components in scale and has a printer on order. Keep it up!

Re: McLaren MCL35M 2021
Hi Thomas,
FIA specification for the step bottom is minimum 150mm and maximum 500 mm from center plane between area lies 430 mm behind the front axial and the rear axial. The shape of the step bottom is free teams to design but has to be symmetrical about the center plane.
This is a prominent feature after 1994.
I think there are some photos of the MCL35M's bottom when it was hoisted on the truck. You may need to do some searching.
