Improve old Smer Kits with 3D printed Wheels

Post by MarcoSaupe »

Hi

finally we had some good weather here so I could make photos again... Some years ago I build those old Smer (ex Merit) kits:

You can immediately see the main problems: the original wheels were very basic (transparent plates where you are supposed to paint the spokes on) and even though I tried to improve the wheels a bit with some leftover parts from some rims, I didn't really succeed...

Well, I got my Elegoo Mars in December and the first thing I tried was to make some wire wheels and profiled tires + spinners for those old kits.

Yes, they are not perfect, the pattern of the spokes was just made by eyeballing it; even now, just a few weeks later I could do better (proper brake drums for the Talbot, better spoke pattern), but I think it's a vast improvement. I really like how thin you can make the spokes, and no sanding necessary except to remove the supports. So I think wheels and tires will never ever be an issue for my kits again ;)

Hi Marco,

You have built another pair of very good looking old racing machines.

The wheels are a big improvement to the original solution.
