Post by Jeff »

Just a quick note for forum member Smirkoff, who may not have noticed my PM in his Inbox RE: his Shapeways conversion parts for Ferrari SF71H

If he could please check his inbox, I would be very grateful :)

Many thanks to Smirkoff for quickly replying to my query, all sorted :)

I will use his 1/20 Ferrari SF71H parts on a Tamiya SF70H to approximate a Haas VF-19, the one with Rich Energy "sponsorship" Details such as bargeboard, front & rear wing etc won't be accurate for the Haas, but if it looks close enough I'm ok with that. Decal design is in progress.

Smirkoff also has parts on Shapeways for the Lotus49B Monaco "ducktail" in both 1/20 & 1/12, as well as other bits & pieces, check it out: https://www.shapeways.com/shops/smirkoff-s-models?li=pb

Smirkoff does excellent work. He has been working on a project of mine for awhile and I could not be more impressed. I am also happy with Shapeways. I am very happy with the parts I have received so far. It is a large scale project and there is plenty that could go wrong, but nothing has. I am happy to say it has been a breeze working with both.

Interesting. Can you provide some insight into the project you are working on? I am curious. Cause I am looking for some assistance in the future.

I have bought the full set of the SF71H conversion, and while I have only dry-fitted a few parts, they seem to fit the Tamiya kit most excellently. And are pretty accurate too!
The parts are printed in SLS and so have no supports, and very fine lines.
The only thing I would add is, they have to be washed before building (some resin residue remained on my parts) and could do with a coat or two of Mr. Surfacer and a fine sandpaper to get the last lines out.
It is still 10000% better than polishing white metal parts!

The only problem is Shapeways pricing :(
I would much rather pay Mr. Smirkoff directly than the go-between in the future, if that can make some business sense. :)

You may want to set your parts in direct sun light for a couple of hours. Resin residue is unlikely but an undercured part is. I have received parts from Shapeways that needed post curing once I had them in hand. They felt sticky, That is the feeling of not fully cured resin. Good luck with your build!!

Shapeways Fine Detail Plastic uses wax as supports and I believe that is usually the film on those parts.

Thanks guys!
It does seem that some parts were undercured / underprocessed (?) as some of them turned milky white with a fine dust on top as I washed them in isopropanol. I then washed them in soapy water which removed the dust somewhat, and I am getting rid of the rest using a soft toothbrush.

Sounds like a not well done washing process. Then the parts get milky white film on some areas.

IIRC the white is where the printed material is done on the support wax and the clear has not touched the wax.
