Subaru Impreza WRC Monte Carlo '05 - Tamiya 1/24

Post by SanMarino »

This is my build/submission for this year's contest at the IPMS Canada club I belong, the theme being 'Scandinavia'. The club is a closed club as it situated where I work and is only open to employees, current and retired. Majority of members are aircraft and military modelers, with myself being the only auto builder. The kit is built to loosely reflect the car driven by Norwegian driver Petter Solberg at the 2005 World Rally Championship season opener in Monte Carlo.

It is an OOB build, with only addition being the use of Tamiya carbon weave pattern decal on the mirrors, front bumper cover, and rear wing. Paints used include an assortment of Tamiya acrylic and lacquer paints - body being painted with LP-41 Mica Blue bottled lacquer; Zero Paints, and; Mr Hobby Mr. Super Clear Gloss UV Cut.

Image

The exterior of the car (body, rear wing, mirrors, and windshields) has a total of 112 individual decals, 68 from the kit itself, and 44 are custom cut from Tamiya carbon pattern decal sheet.

The rear wing has thirty five custom cut Tamiya carbon weave pattern decals.

The underside includes a number of skid plates which unfortunately hides the suspension detail, which can be seen in some the WIP pictures.

As for the club contest, I scored 10 of the 14 votes casted for the victory.

Enjoy,
Mike

Hello Mike,

Outstanding work, it is super clean, I’m really fan of your paint job, just the rear wing should be hours to put the carbon decal.

Cheers

Looks great! I'm finishing up this kit myself. Wanted to do the full rear wing CF decal job like you did, but unfortunately the Scale motorsport decals feel apart immediately so I just painted it instead.

What did you do to not have the window decals be obvious that they're decals? They look great, I always have issues where you can see the film around them.

Nice! You gotta love those Scoobies in their natural blue! 10/14 score is a nice finish, especially considering the voters are mostly mil/aircraft modelers.

Hi Frank, between making the masking tape templates and applying the 35 individual decals, and the painting, about 10 hours went into the rear wing.

Hey Stubeck, I minimized its appearance by cutting as close as possible to the edge of the decal, but certain spots like those areas within the number 5 were left in tact as to not risk things going wrong while rushing to finish it. They just are not visible in the photos and are not overly distracting the looking at the actual model. I threw around the idea of dipping the windshield in Future floor polish (the aircraft builders do this with cockpit canopies to give the windscreen a near crystal clear look) after applying the decals but thought the better of it and did not and happy I did not.

Thank you. There are in total about 12 coats of lacquer clear applied in 3 stages of 4 coats each, with wet sanding in between stages. Perhaps I could have reduced the amount of work using 2K clear, but I do not have the the workspace to airbrush it.

Cheers,
Mike
