2022 F1 Team CARS presentation

Post by JamesB »

Well, surely there's a long way to go, but with the ecuse of the first sneak preview of '22 Merc, let's start this thread.
Maybe it might be therapeutic to rant preventively about the cars so later we'll see them nicer.

Now my question:
er.... the curved union between wings and their endplates is mandatory???? I find it terribly "CARS" cartoon style
SAme question on the "eyebrows" on the tyre shoulders...
Otherwise, am I the only one to see an MP4/20??? :D

Ignoring the Halo that is here to stay, just judging from the FIA showcar and this teaser picture I find the new car(s) better than the montrosties we've had in recent years.

I think that's the F1 show car with no decals, no one is using clevises and rod ends for front suspension mounts anymore, especially bolted to the front bulkhead like that!!

No wing adjustment, 3D printed mirrors!!!!

They're spinning us a yarn I feel!!!!

Let's hope it is just a load of rubbish. That wing is horrible and child like. I had a 20 plus year professional career in automotive design, and this looks like the carp spewed out there by CCS or Art Center students. I hope more realism appears in the cars, and they actually DO look different. If the H-ass looks like this it is fine though.

There are still a few possibilities to adapt the design, but you are also limited in many corners...

THanks Thomas! That's what we needed. Oh lord how difficult to grasp and aprehend it is!!
OK, on the topic we are into:
"The blend radius has to be bigger than a 20mm arc, preventing any sharp corners which could produce undesired vortices."
So... yes. And I also read yesterday that the shape of rear wing, like a bent bacon stripe, is also mandatory and meant to favor an air trail that does not detract downforce from trailing car. But the saddest thing I read is that a "graphic designer has helped to define the shape" Ahem....
I'll miss the 90 degree wall like sideplates. They smell like a racing car done to a formula, exploiting rules to the limit. The roundish thing feels like an Automobile Show supercar...
We'll get used to them, though, I suppose.

I actually kinda like the front and rear view. Slightly different. Without the Halo the front view might even be pretty cool. It's just that the side view is yuck. To me it seems weird how these cars are stretched way too long, especially considering the parts they pack, the proportions are "wrong". But then again, the same is true for most actual road cars as well, longer and wider to package all the stuff. But since I don't really follow it anyway, who am I to comment or complain, right? Still, early to mid 90s were the pinnacle for me, shapewise, sound wise (last V12 in the 412t2 '95) - the first F1 season I remember was Lauda's last championship.

James, being a former graphic designer myself, I still like some views, see above. I agree the square and angular shapes of yesteryear were awesome and seemed to say "future", much in the way the shape of the Countach or or the Modulo did, but more often than not, flat shapes haven been replaced by rippled, curved or whatever shaped surface areas in a quest to be more efficient etc. So nowadays they employ different (flexible) materials to bend the rules (ahem, mind the pun). To be honest, I have been wondering why we haven't yet seen a fully enclosed car. Basically like the LMP1s, probably considerably better aerodynamically, but of course then it wouldn't be open wheel racing anymore.
Cheers,
Roman
